I seek assistance in all of Allah's Names in writing this...
"...He puts his glasses down..."
There were many benefits and beautiful details during the lessons of our Shaykh Muhammad bin Ali bin Ādam al-ityubi - may Allah have mercy on him, forgive and cover his misdeeds.
And here am I conveying to you one of those beautiful details from his gatherings:
During his lessons, he - رحمه الله - would wear his glasses. The Shaykh would read the study material by himself then offer his invaluable commentary.
It was from his custom to hold his glasses with his right hand during commentary, then, once he finished his commentary, he would put his glasses on again and continue the lesson...
However, whenever he wanted to offer a lengthy explanation, he would position his glasses in front of him......
And lo and behold in depth analysis, subtle insights, and his invaluable conclusions.
As a result we would observe attentively whenever he placed his glasses in order to truly make use of his benefits.
May Allah forgive and have mercy on our Shaykh.
🤲 O Allah, forgive Abu Abdil Jaleel, elevate his station among those who are guided, take care of his affairs that were left behind him, and forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Enlarge for him his grave and shed light upon him in it.

Here are some fond memories of light moments with Sh. Muhammad Ali Adam al-Ethiopi (Rahimahullah) from the time he taught us Sunan al-Nasai at Dar al-Hadith al-Khairiyyah (circa 2005-2006):
1. The rule in Shaykh's class was that if anyone happened to doze off, he would be made to stand up till the end of class. Once I was close to dozing off, and being in the first row the Shaykh saw me and told me to stand. The Shaykh was reading some selected passages from his commentary on al-Nasai, and I had the same in my hand. While standing with the book in my hand, I noticed a typo in one of the passages the Shaykh skipped. I immediately exclaimed, Shaykh! a typo! And the Shaykh immediately was like in his unique style:
الله المستعان! الله المستعان! أين؟ أين؟
Here I found my opportunity! I said, Shaykh, I will only tell you if you allow me to sit! And the Shaykh laughs and tells me to sit down. To correct his book for the new edition was more important for him than to keep me standing!
2. Once the Shaykh was explaining the Hadith when Abu Sufyan's wife came complaining to the Prophet ﷺ that her husband is very stingy, so he ﷺ allowed her to take from his money what suffices her and her children. And the Shaykh started to mention the difference of opinion between scholars on whether the judge can pronounce a verdict in the absence of the defendant. The Shaykh mentioned that some scholars say that passing judgment against a person in absentia is not allowed, and the Hadith does not contradict that, because it is not a verdict (قضاء) rather a Fatwa (فتوى).
I don't know what came over me, but I said, Shaykh, this seems to be the stronger opinion!
Immediately the Shaykh burst into laughter saying:
الآن ظهرت حنفيتك يا سندي! الآن ظهرت حنفيتك يا سندي!
This opinion happened to me that of the Hanafiyyah, but I didn't know that when said what I said.
3. I used to attend Dar al-Hadeeth wearing the normal Saudi attire, but it so happened that once I attended wearing the Pakistani dress, and the Shaykh sees me in class and laughs and says, this is the attire of Imam Yahya b. Yayha al-Naisapuri (d. 226) which Imam Ahmed (d. 241) turned down! Then the Shaykh mentioned how Yahya b. Yahya had willed that after his death his clothes be given to Imam Ahmed. When they were brought to Imam Ahmed in Baghdad, he took only one and turned down the rest saying, this attire is not worn here in our city!
He was a unique embodiment of knowledge, asceticism, humility, and cheerfulness. May Allah have mercy on him.
