Google Blog

With the release of Android 12L, besides bringing in fixes and improvements to Pixel devices, it is also now better optimise for use in tablets.

One of the noticeable changes is the dual column layout. When swiping down from your home screen, you will see quick settings panel on the left and notification panel on the right. In the system settings, you can also go into each section directly from the left panel and change the settings on the right side.

Besides, Google added a taskbar so you can use it with much more productive, just like on your desktop. Dragging the app icon from the taskbar allows you to open it in split-screen mode and do two things at the same time in one screen.

Soon you will get to see other tablets and foldables by Samsung, Lenovo and Microsoft to get the update too. Google also promised to continue improving it with the release of Android 13 and so on.

Chrome OS will soon get dark boot screen
Android Police

Recently, it is spotted that Chrome OS 101 will add a dark boot screen for those who really like dark theme.

So far, there are currently two types of boot screen being tested out, one comes with the monochromatic logo and another one comes with the color. Anyway as expected, you will get a dark background with the Chrome OS logo on the boot screen.

Chrome OS 101 is currently still in the Dev channel and might break some stuff here and there. Some users reported after enabling the dark boot screen flag, some areas in the system doesn't have dark mode anymore. So if you want to stay on the safe side, wait for the feature to arrive on the stable or beta channel at least.

'Monet' source code is now available in Android 12L AOSP
Mishaal Rahman | Source code

As Android 12L released to the stable channel, Google had upload the source code for it accompanying with the "Monet" engine. We already knew that the "Monet" engine will be going open source with the release of Android 12L a few months ago, so it's not really surprising to see that.

Earlier we had know that Google wanted OEMs to implement it into their devices running Android 12, they can either choose to make their own one or use Google's home-made engine, that will be effective starting next week, which we will see more companies offering dynamic theming engine in their Android 12 software skin.

All Android 12L AOSP custom ROMs will come with the dynamic theme engine system, which means you don't need to rely on other resources to get it anymore soon.

Chrome 100 is getting more Material You elements
Android Police

If you are using Chrome on Android 12, you might have already noticed some part of the apps have already adapted Material You design and stuff. With the upcoming Chrome 100 release, Google seems to be adding more support to Material You.

When swiping down the page to reload, you will notice the reload icon have a different color instead of the usual blue, that's because it's now follow your device's wallpaper color. Tapping on the three dot on the top right will show you the overflow menu with color tones too. You will also get to see the same results when entering the settings page.

It's nice to see more parts of the browser are starting to adapt Material You elements. These are currently appearing via server side on Chrome 100, which is on the beta channel at the time of writing.

Android 12L stable release removed 'Show touches' from system screen recorder
9To5Google

Google added built-in screen recorder for Android with the release of Android 11. It is fairly simple to use, giving you options to record audio from which source and show touches on screen. Android 12L recently just hit stable release and unfortunately, one feature has been removed from the screen recorder.

When tapping on the screen recording option from the QS panel, you will see the popup menu animating. If you are coming from Android 12, you will realise that the "show touches on screen" option has vanished. According to this commit, the Android development team said "the touch points currently cannot be recorded due to changes in how the cursor is drawn."

Android 13 Developer Preview 1 apparently still have this feature kept, hopefully the feature could make its return in Android 12 stable release.

Google really want their users to know about Feature Drop
9To5Google

March Pixel Feature Drop has just being issued recently and apparently Google wanted Pixel users to know about the feature they have rolled out to the devices.

9To5Google reported that after updating successfully and unlock the device, you will be treated with a fullscreen “Your Pixel got more helpful” page. With the recent released March Pixel Feature Drop, the screen only showed two cards, highlighting custom text stickers and the new battery widget. At the bottom of the screen, you can either skip to exit to your home screen or proceed to the Tips and learn how to use the feature.

Not everyone is receiving the changes though, but the behaviour could be widely rollout starting with the next Feature Drop in June.

Upcoming Android feature will allow users to free up storage space without uninstalling apps
Android Developers Blog

A lot of casual users easily filled up their phone storage, and when they faced this issue, most will choose to uninstall applications they don't used frequently. Recently, Google has announced a solution to free up storage space without having to uninstall applications.

Soon you will be able to archive applications and save up to 60% of storage space without having to uninstall the whole app. Google explained they're able to free up space by removing parts of the app, also the archived app can be later restored to the latest available compatible version.

Apps built with Android Gradle Plugin 7.3 will generate a new archived APKs format, which "are very small APKs that preserve user data until the app is restored." App developers can take advantage of the feature by using the upcoming version of Bundletool 1.10. This feature looks very promising, and it is likely to launch with the release of Android 13.

Google Search desktop web new interface layout got some update
A few months ago, we have show you a new interface desktop layout of Google Search. By today, it has received a lot of improvements and a few refinements too.

When you compared this to the previous one we show, you can see that the search bar now has darker shade instead of just white, hover over it will make the search bar even darker, for dark mode it's just vice versa. Search suggestion used up almost the whole page, previously you still can see the knowledge panel though.

Rest of the part are pretty much the same as the current design. By the way, there's another experiment going on too, which put the categories section to the right side of the search bar.

Google Play billing system temporary stopped working in Russia
Mishaal Rahman

Users in Russia won't be able to access paid content with Play Store anymore, as Google has announced to pause the Google Play's billing system in the country.

Subnoscription will continue to be effective until the end of billing period, but after that it is not possible to renew during the pause, and the company will honor existing subnoscription billing grace periods.

Developers have a few options regarding this situation, either to extend the grace period after their billing period ends for up to 30 days, defer a user’s renewal for up to one year, or make the service temporary free.

It's just the billing system being affected, users will still be able to download free apps and apps they have purchased earlier from the Play Store. Developers can still continue to push updates and publish applications.
