Translating text on images with Lens is getting better with an update

Google Lens, the powerful search tool but it's powered by using your camera. It can search for the web, extract text and even translate it too, and that's about to get better with an update soon.

So this update was actually announced back in September when Google held the Search On 2022. If you use Google Lens right now and translate any text with a complex background behind it, you will notice the translated text appears as an overlay. As you can see in the video above, an update to the Lens will make the results much cleaner, it's basically hard to tell the difference, hope Google can match up the font though.

This update is automatically done so you no need to do anything and it will arrive when it's the time. It's definitely a welcome addition to see it. There are also many new features coming to Search soon which you can learn more on the blog.

New features & icons for the communication services by Google

Google is finally bringing more features to their Messages app and here's what new you will get to do soon.

Replying to individual messages is possible if the conversation is using RCS. Voice message trannoscription will be arriving on the Pixel 6 series, Galaxy S22 and the Fold 4. You can also "star" messages and check them back later when you have the time. Suggested actions like creating a calendar event or having a Meet call are shown depending on your message content. Furthermore, there will be free RCS messaging over in-flight Wi-Fi, rolling out this for most carriers with United WiFi.

Besides Messages, new icon will be coming to the Contacts and Phone app too. Google said that it is designed to adapt Material You themes, which will start rolling out by the end of this year.

Introducing Android 13 (Go edition)

Google announced a lightweight Android operating system called Go edition, and recently they recorded over 250 million devices are currently running that particular system. Just recently, they announced the next version of the operating system: Android 13 (Go edition).

Google Play System update arrived, which means any devices will directly receive updates from Google without having to wait for the manufacturers to do so. Google Discover on the launcher page is added too. Lastly, Material You support, which the accent color of your phone will be following the color scheme from the wallpaper you applied. Besides, several Android 13 features are also added like Notification Permissions, App Language Preferences and more.

Android 13 (Go edition) will be available sometime in 2023 with newly launched devices.

Bug found in Android lets you unlock someone's device with just a SIM card

A recently disclosed vulnerability gives any attacker with physical access to your Android device the ability to unlock it.

Most devices running Android 10 to Android 13 were affected with this bug whether they are running OneUI, MIUI or even Pixel's stock OS. Custom ROMs are also affected by it.

The attacker only needs a SIM card with the PIN and PUK code to run this exploit. PUK (Personal Unlocking Key) is an 8-digit code unique to your SIM card. It is used to unlock your mobile and reset your SIM PIN.

The vulnerability is tracked with CVE-2022-20465 with patches for this issue being now available for AOSP 10-13.

The security researcher reported this bug to Android’s Vulnerability Rewards Program in the middle of this year, but Google did not move on the issue until September after some in-person prompting. It resulted in a $70,000 reward and is listed in the November security patch under a “System” issue with “High” severity.

Google Home redesign preview rolling out to beta testers

Finally, the Google Home redesign has come to the public after being showcased a month ago. Users that signed to the Google Home Public Preview program will have a prompt to join the preview after launching the app.

Here's a showcase of how it looks like. The app is not final yet with some elements needing some polishing, but it's a good baseline of how it will look like in the future.
