Google has finally fixed the vulnerability that they found
Mishaal Rahman
After discovering the exploit 6 months ago, the Google Pixel team has finally fixed the Mali GPU Kernel Driver issue that was found by the Project Zero team at Google.
The vulnerability, known as CVE-2022-36449, was found between June and July 2022 and was fixed by ARM in July and August 2022. However, many OEMs, including Pixel, Samsung, Xiaomi, and Oppo, have yet to address the issue.
Affected Pixel 6 and 7 series devices have been patched with an updated GPU driver in the Android 13 QPR2 Beta 1 with stable builds rolling out in March of 2023.
Google told Engadget that "The fix provided by ARM is currently undergoing testing for Android and Pixel devices and will be delivered in the coming weeks...Android OEM partners will be required to take the patch to comply with future SPL requirements."
This could mean that Google could require OEMs (including themselves) to include this fix starting from the January 2023 security patch.

Pixel 8 series could use the Samsung GN2 sensor for staggered HDR
Source
Developer @Za_Raczke has discovered information of Pixel 8 codenames: "Shiba" and "Husky". Besides that, he has found code referencing to staggered HDR support.
Staggered HDR allows capturing different exposures at the same time, using the same pixels. This allows the same effect as regular HDR without the increased capture time & chance of the photos being blurry because of the frames misaligning by the movement.
The previous Pixel 7's use the last gen GN1 sensor which doesn't support staggered HDR, which hints the GN2 sensor or other being on the Pixel 8 series that is capable of it.
The 50MP ISOCELL GN2 is a 1/1.12-inch sensor, which is bigger than GN1’s 1/1.31-inch sensor. ISOCELL GN2’s Staggered HDR is a better and more efficient way to capture images with a wide dynamic range. Samsung claims that the new sensor is 24% more power efficient due to its newer method of capturing images. It also features an improved autofocus mechanism called Dual Pixel Pro.
Our friends at @TechLeaksZone made a post about the display and Tensor G3 specs of the Pixel 8, click here to check it out!

Pixel 6a wins MKBHD's 2022 blind camera test!
YouTube
Surprisingly, the Google Pixel 6a won this year's MKBHD's Blind Smartphone Camera Test 2022!
It received the most points on average in the community voting beating the Pixel 7 Pro (at second place), Zenfone 9, Find X5 Pro, S22 Ultra, iPhone 14 Pro and the Mate 50 Pro.
While the phone wasn't the best in the three categories: regular, night mode and portrait, it performed well, ranking in the top three for each category, with it being 3rd in regular, 2nd in night mode and portrait.
For comparison, the Pixel 7 came in 2nd, 4th and 1st, and the iPhone 14 Pro came in 6th, 10th and 5th in the respective categories.
Last year, the Pixel 5a was the winner of the test featuring the same camera sensor.
The good old 12MP Sony IMX 363 sensor (used since the Pixel 2 in 2017) shockingly beat the 50MP Samsung GN1 sensor used in the Pixel 7 Pro.
