Google Pixel 7 wins MKBHD's 2022 Smartphone Awards
MKBHD

Like each year, MKBHD made a ranking of his favorite smartphones released this year.

The Pixel 7 managed to win three awards: Best Value, Best Improved and Phone of the Year.

Marques praised the Pixel 7 for bringing the flagship chip and cameras to the $599 phone that "it's so good that it made the Pixel 7 Pro sounds like not that good of a deal".

It got the Phone of the Year award for it's camera system, display, flagship software experience, good battery life and not a lot missing that it's hard to not recommend.

As for winners of the other awards, you can check the post at our friends' channel, Tech & Leaks Zone.

Google Assistant wins MKBHD's 2023 Voice Assistant Battle!
MKBHD

With Marques last testing the most popular voice assistants in 2017, he has decided to test them all again five years later.

Google Assistant won the first place, with Siri and Bixby being next and Alexa being far from the competition.

Google Assistant and Siri were both fast to answer questions. However, Siri and Bixby struggled with lagging or hanging during the test.

They all were good with answering questions or facts, but Google Assistant and Bixby did the best job with controlling the device with the ability to easily take selfies, play movies on Netflix, and start recordings.

Google Assistant also stood out for its ability to maintain a conversation, with Siri coming in a close second.

LineageOS 20 is here!
LineageOS

Our prediction was right, LineageOS will be starting to distribute official builds of Android 13 from now on, alongside with LineageOS 18.1 (monthly release) & 19.1.

As of now, the Pixel 4 & 5 series (including mid-range A-series) are the only Pixels to receive official builds from LineageOS. Originally Pixel devices as old as Pixel 2 series all the way till Pixel 7 series were supposed to have the same treatment, but due to build signature issues and incomplete device tree development, they are being delayed for now. As of the Pixel 1, it will stick with Android 11 for the meantime.

Anyway, besides Pixel devices the other 45 (total: 51) devices from different manufacturers will also receive the update too. Of course, even if your device isn't in the list, you can always check your community if there's a build for your device if interested.

Google's Find My Device could track your devices without a network connection in the future
Source

As of now, Google's Find My Device only tracks your devices with an internet connection, but that could change after the December 2022 Play Store update as it mentions:
"Find My Device now supports encrypted last-known-location reports for Android devices, using a new privacy-centric framework."

This could mean that Google is working to allow Find My Device to track Android devices that have been lost or stolen even without an internet connection.

With an updated Find My Device network, the location services from other Android devices could help find other Android users' missing handsets, like with Apple's Find My network.

As the information would be encrypted, only the owner of the "discovered" device would know where it is located. This network could also be used to find missing Wear OS watches.

With over 3 billion Android devices being used worldwide, Google's Find My Device network could cover the whole planet.

A Google Home exploit lets attackers listen to your microphone and execute commands
Source

Matt Kunze, a security researcher found a way for attackers to spy on Google Home speakers using Routines.

Routines are a way to execute multiple commands at once, like "Hello Google, good morning" could turn on the lights and read you the weather.

Using a rooted phone with Magisk and man-in-the-middle tools he found a way to link his own Google account to a nearby speaker by sending deauthorization packets.

With the access to the speaker, he used Routines to run commands such as "call [phone number]" to send the microphone feed to a phone number. He can also make arbitrary HTTP requests within the victim’s LAN (which could potentially expose the Wi-Fi password or provide the attacker direct access to the victim’s other devices).

After reporting this on the 8th of January 2021, Google fixed this issue in April and rewarded him with $107500 in May of 2022.

Source

The Pixel 7a has been leaked on a Vietnamese Facebook group, with a video showing the display settings where you can see the Smooth Display option for the 90Hz refresh rate.

Besides that, you can see it's design which is similar to the regular 7 with the camera bar being slightly thinner, just like with the Pixel 6 and 6a.

We've gotten ahold of a better resolution video of the Pixel 7a.

The device captured on the video is a DVT (design validation test) prototype, running internal software as there are internal apps like Camera Obfuscator on the app drawer.

The prototype Pixel 7a has been bricked.
Source

Google has been making some progress in preventing leaks, such as bricking leaked devices and the lack of a black market for unreleased phones (so far). Nevermind. However, they still have a long way to go in terms of keeping secrets.

This was evident when a leaked Pixel 7a prototype was recently posted on a Facebook group. The device reportedly was purchased online.

Google was able to remotely wipe the device and remove the post after a day of it being up.

It's likely that they were able to track it down easily, since it was connected to the Internet and the video included the prototype's IMEI, serial number, and the user's Gmail.

A photo of the device in Fastboot mode reveals that the Pixel 7a will have 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, an upgrade from the 6GB of RAM on the Pixel 6a.

Google Maps gains phone-less turn by turn direction on WearOS watches without LTE
9To5Google

Google has announced that WearOS watches will now be able to show you directions without a phone with just a Wi-Fi or LTE connection.

You can use the app from the watch or “if you have enabled mirroring and start navigation on your phone and then leave your phone behind, your watch will take over navigation from your phone.”.
