New features in Android 14 Beta 4
Mishaal Rahman

Besides the brand new easter egg, there's a bunch of other changes in the latest Android beta, here's a list of them:

Auto-confirm unlock
• This feature will automatically unlock your device after entering your 6 digit (or longer) passcode

See the manufacturing year of your device
• In Settings > About Phone > Model you'll be able to see the year that your device was made from the serial number

Lock Screen customization is finally on Pixel 4a 5G, 5 and 5a!
• Custom lock screen clocks have been brought to older Pixels, which did not have this feature yet. This feature was already present on Pixel 6 and 7 series on previous betas. It has not been enabled yet on the Pixel Tablet though, maybe it will come in the next beta?

New status bar icon for silent mode
• Instead of a crossed-out bell, the icon for silent mode has been changed to a crossed-out speaker symbol

Nearby Share for Windows is out of beta with plans to preinstall it on PCs
Google Blog

Today, Google is officially launching Nearby Share for Windows. With this said, the program has gotten some new features, like an estimated time for file transfers or an image preview in device notifications, so you can see if you're sending the correct file.

Google is also working with partners like HP to bring the Nearby Share app by default on select PCs such as the HP Dragonfly Pro.

The app requires a PC running a 64-bit version of Windows 10/11 with Bluetooth and an Internet connection with the device being on the same network and being within 5 meters (16 feet) from each other.

You can download the Nearby Share app on the Android website.

Android KitKat to stop receiving Play Services update this year
Android Developers Blog

It's been nearly 10 years since Android KitKat was released to the public. As people upgraded their device over time, the older versions got slowly abandoned and by today, Google reported that there are less than 1% active devices that are still running KitKat, hence they decided to drop support for it soon.

Google Play Services version 23.30.99 will be the last available update for Android KitKat. API levels 19 & 20 (Android Wear, now known as Wear OS) are affected with this change.

Unknown tracker alerts are rolling out to Android devices
Google Blog

Starting today, Google will be rolling unknown tracker alerts to devices running Android 6.0 and later. As of now, this feature will only let you know if any Apple AirTags are tracking you with other tracker tags coming soon as a part of the joint specification.

Your device will automatically notify you if it determines that an unknown tracker is moving with you. After tapping on the notification you can:
- see a map with the history of the tracker moving with you,
- play a sound without the owner knowing

Google also provides advice on what to do:
- contact someone you trust or the authorities
- save tracker information if it's marked as lost by tapping the tracker
- and instructions on how to physically disable the tracker

Located in the Settings under Safety & Emergency > Unknown tracker alerts > Scan Now, you'll also be able to manually scan for unknown trackers and list the ones around you.

Find My Device network and trackers delayed, due to Apple not being ...Ready For It?
9To5Google

Speaking of the Find My Device network, Google has announced that its launch will be delayed “until Apple has implemented protections for iOS.”

Later this summer, you'll be able to track your Pixel Buds (after an update), headphones by JBL and Sony, use Bluetooth trackers by Chipolo, Pebblebee and Tile using the Find My Device network.

Google has built the network with user privacy as a key priority with end-to-end encryption of the data which they cannot see or use. More information about the privacy safeguards will be revealed later.

Google abandons Fuchsia plans for Assistant smart speakers

Google has been upgrading some devices to its custom-built Fuchsia OS, and the assumption was that the Zircon-powered software would make its way to Assistant smart speakers as well.

Google has abandoned its plans to upgrade its line of Assistant smart speakers to Fuchsia. This news comes as a disappointment to some fans of Fuchsia, who had hoped that the operating system would eventually replace Cast OS as the underlying software for all of Google's smart home products.

The Fuchsia team has removed the code for these speakers from the Fuchsia Gerrit.

Chrome 116 is receiving one time permissions, like Android
Chrome Developer Blog

In the latest Chrome beta, you'll be able to give a website your location, camera or microphone access for one visit, instead of giving access to it all the time.

The one time permission will expire after:
- you close the tab, navigate it away or discard it
- 16 hours have passed
- you manually revoke the permission
- the page has been in the background (unless it's allowed to run in the background, like with the camera or mic)

You will also notice a tab strip indicator to let you know what tab has access to your camera/microphone in the background.

To enable this, open chrome://flags/#one-time-permission and select enable.

Pixel Watch 2 leaks: New chip, UWB, and more
Android Authority

Kamila Wojciechowska has revealed more details about the upcoming Pixel Watch 2, besides the brand new watch faces.

Pixel Watch 2 will be powered by a four-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 with a custom NXP-based coprocessor, with better GPU performance and power efficiency.

It will feature a NXP SR100T UWB module which could be used for device location, unlocking cars with a digital key, or seamless music playback.

Besides that, the Pixel Watch 2 has a slightly bigger 306mAh battery. The display remains a 1.2-inch 384x384 round OLED, but the switch to Samsung Display may bring improved brightness or new energy-saving features.

Pixel Watch 2 ships with Wear OS 4 based on Android 13 with Seamless Updates.

It may be released in more regions with a recent entry for India's BIS regulatory body suggesting a launch in India.

The animation attached to this post will be shown on demo units.
