Some tidbits from Google's AMA on Reddit about Android 14:
—-
In Google's Ask Me Anything (AMA) about Android 14 on Reddit, someone asked about the status of satellite SOS/SMS.
In response, Google said they're "working on it! In fact you can see the new telephony satellite interface in Android 14 source code. More to come on the Satellite eSOS feature soon."
—-
The Pixel 8 series will add support for lossless USB audio in a future later release, according to Dave Burke in response to a comment from a Redditor.
Android 14 added support for lossless audio formats over USB wired headsets.
—-
Dave Burke has shared more details about the new optimizations in ART 14, the major new version of the Android Runtime that's available in Android 14 (and will likely be backported to Android 12+ devices via a Project Mainline update).
For context, Google earlier said ART 14 "includes optimizations that reduce code size by an average of 9.3% without impacting performance." The smaller the files containing the code that ART has to interpret, the better it is for memory and storage.
According to Burke, these ART optimizations include "dead code elimination, collapse return statements, etc. An average phone can have 500MB-1GB of optimized code so this translates to a 50-100MB savings!"

Google confirms Pixel 8 series will support lossless USB audio in the future
Source
Google added lossless USB audio support in Android 14 beta 2. This feature claims to add audiophile-level experiences over compatible USB wired headsets.
Google has now confirmed that lossless USB audio will come to the Pixel 8 series and phones from other OEMs soon.
In a Reddit AMA, Google’s VP of Engineering, Dave Burke said that the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro are expected to gain a lossless mode in a future software update.
App developers will need to adopt the new API for lossless audio to take advantage of the feature. Once they do that, audio can be sent directly over USB without any mixing, volume adjustment, or processing effects.

Google Maps can now show you real-time weather information about a location. This includes the current temperature and weather conditions for the next few hours as well as the air quality.
This is rolling out for some users (I got it on my Pixel 7 Pro) and is accessed by tapping the pill under the left edge of the search bar.
Thanks to colorkin for the tip!
Edit: You can also get real-time weather information in Immersive View.

Google Clock v7.6 adds alarm sync with Pixel Watch
AssemblyDebug
The latest Google Clock has added a long awaited feature for Pixel Watch owners of syncing alarms to the watch.
You can enable alarm sync in the settings, but as of now it is not working. It likely requires an update to the watch companion app or Wear OS update.
Sadly, this feature is not available for other Wear OS watches :(

Google Play Protect gets real-time scanning for apps
Google Security Blog
Google has announced that Play Protect is getting real-time scanning at the code-level to combat malicious apps, as previously it only warned users when it identified an app known to be malicious from previous scans or similar to other suspicious apps.
Scanning an app will extract important signals from the app and send them to Google for a code evaluation. Once the analysis is complete, users will get a result letting them know if the app looks safe to install or not.
This feature is rolling out to all Android devices with Google Play services in select countries, starting with India, and will come to all regions in the next months.

Google Tensor G3 is the first Android smartphone chip to only support 64-bit apps
Starting with iOS 11, Apple removed 32-bit app support to improve the performance, and Google's Tensor G3 chip is the first Android smartphone chip to do the same.
Google claimed that the Pixel 7 was the first 64-bit-only Android phone, but later it was found that 32-bit support can be enabled with root.
Now with Tensor G3, Google has removed all 32-bit hardware support on the chip, which has these advantages:
- 64-bit apps run faster because they have access to more registers and instructions
- saving up to 150MB of RAM that was used by the OS even when 32-bit apps weren't running
- 64-bit apps are more resistant to security vulnerabilities than 32-bit
- 64-bit-only device configurations halve the CTS testing time which can let phone OEMs update devices faster and more easily
Although most apps already support 64-bit, users won't be able to use some old games/apps that only support 32-bit devices.

Google is shipping some Pixel 8 smartphones with unlocked bootloaders
Reddit
Some users are reporting that their Pixel 8 smartphones have unlocked bootloaders out of the box. However, its not a widespread issue.
This shouldn't have happened, as it poses a big security risk of the device being tampered with during shipping if it wasn't a screw up on Google's side.
An unlocked bootloader definitely would discourage users, as after unboxing a brand new phone they see a screen stating that the software integrity cannot be guaranteed and to not store sensitive data on the device.
Fortunately, you can flash the stock software and lock the bootloader yourself, or simply return the device to Google for a replacement if you're distrustful of the device.
