Google is rolling out the update to the Pixel Thermometer app that enables body temperature scanning on the Pixel 8 Pro, but only if you're in the U.S.

The app checks that the ISO country code using the TelephonyManager.getSimCountryIso() method returns "us", which means your SIM has to be connected to a network in the U.S.

This is because Google has only received approval to use this feature in the U.S. so far, but if you're outside of the U.S., modders have already figured out how to forcefully enable this feature. Using the same method used to enable VoLTE/VoWiFi in unsupported regions, @nullby whipped up a quick app that lets you change the ISO country code read by the app to whatever you want. So you just grant the app shell-level privileges using Shizuku so it can call the TelephonyManager APIs and then use the app to set the country code to "us", unlocking the body temperature scanning feature in the Thermometer app.

The best part is that this persists even if you reset the country code (as you should) so long as you don't wipe the data of the app or uninstall it.

Assistant with Bard has appeared a bit early in the Pixel Tips app, giving us another look at how the upcoming feature will work.

But it also reveals when it'll arrive and on what devices it'll be available on. This is early info and could be wrong, but here's what I found:

1) The Assistant with Bard tip's "publication date" is 202403, which means this should go live in March alongside the March 2024 Pixel Feature Drop.

2) The Assistant with Bard tip is blocked from appearing on every Pixel device except for the Tensor-powered Pixel phones. The Pixel Tablet (tangorpro), Pixel Fold (felix), and rumored Pixel Fold 2 (comet) appear on the denylist. The tip is also blocked from appearing on devices running Android builds with IDs that start with UP1, UD1, and UQ1, which means it won't appear unless you're running the QPR2 beta (which starts with AP1) or the upcoming stable QPR2 release.

If you have a Pixel phone and have been unable to access your files after updating to the January 2024 Google Play System Update, Google has shared a fix.

1) Download and set up ADB on your PC (there are many tutorials online for this).

2) Connect your phone to your PC and run the following ADB commands:

adb uninstall com.google.android.media.swcodec

adb uninstall com.google.android.media

3) Reboot your phone.

Google says that this issue is more prevalent in devices with multiple user accounts and/or work profiles and that they working on a fix for the root cause of this issue. Google's temporary solution today involves uninstalling updates to the Media and Medic Codecs Mainline modules.

Last week, I learned from a source that Google halted the January 2024 GPSU because they discovered that the DCLA Mainline module was inadvertently rolling back to the factory installed version for some users, causing mismatched dependency issues with other DCLA-enabled modules. It looks like both Media and Medic Codecs are DCLA-enabled modules, and this mismatch caused them to misbehave and resulted in the storage access-related issues that some users have been facing.

For a more detailed step-by-step guide, see Google's post on the Pixel community forums.

Gemini for Android is here! This new app makes it easier to access Google's chatbot, powered by the Gemini Pro LLM, right from your Android device. You can ask Gemini a question by tapping the launcher icon or long-pressing the power button. Once invoked, the Gemini overlay lets you enter a text or text+image prompt. You can tap the camera icon to snap a photo or press the "add this screen" button to take a screenshot of the current page to include in your prompt.

The Gemini app for Android is available on Google Play with support for English, but support for Korean and Japanese will be coming next week. While there won't be an app for iOS, iPhone users can access Gemini by opening the Google App and tapping the "Gemini" button up top.

How can you long-press the power button to invoke Gemini if that gesture is handled by Google Assistant? The answer is that the Gemini Android app can replace Google Assistant as your default assistant if you want, meaning all the ways you'd normally invoke Google Assistant on your phone can instead invoke Gemini. Unfortunately, Gemini currently doesn't offer ALL the same functionality as Google Assistant and requires an active data connection, but more features will be added over time.

There's also now a Gemini Advanced tier, which offers access to Google's most powerful Ultra 1.0 LLM. Access to Gemini Advanced requires a subnoscription to the new $20/month "AI Premium" Google One plan, which offers the same benefits as the 2TB plan but adds access to Gemini Advanced and soon Gemini features in Gmail, Docs, & other Workspace apps (formerly under the Duet AI umbrella). Gemini Advanced is available in English on the web.

Here's the Play Store link for Google Gemini, and attached to this post is the APK. The Gemini app isn't really standalone; it just acts as a shortcut to the Gemini entrypoint in the Google App, much like the Assistant and Lens "apps" on Google Play.

Note that you may need to be in the U.S. to access Gemini on Android right now.

Alleged Google Tensor G4 spotted on Geekbench 5!

A Google device codenamed as "Google Tokay" (a lizard species) has been spotted on GeekBench 5

CPU:
• 1x Cortex-X4 @ 3.1 GHz
• 3x Cortex-A720 @ 2.6GHz
• 4x Cortex-A520 @ 1.95GHz
GPU: Mali-G715 MP???

A Octa-core configuration (1+3+4)

Tensor G3 meanwhile:
1x Cortex-X3 @ 2.91GHz
4 x Cortex-A715 @ 2.37GHz
4 x Cortex-A510 @ 1.70GHz
Nona-core configuration (1+4+4)

NO Idea why the number of total CPU cores is decreased from 9 to 8

NOTE: Tensor G4 is still in testing likely, thus the Geekbench 5 scores are NOT the final scores

Tensor G4 (Zuma-pro) will be manufactured by Samsung Foundry on its 4nm LPP+ process likely
(same node on which Exynos 2400 has been manufactured)

Android 15 DP1 is coming on Thursday, according to a Googler (H/T 9to5Google).

If you want to know what's coming in Android 15, check out the posts I've done for Android Authority and Android Police or my threads on what's new in the Android 14 QPR betas.

One of the features I'm most excited for is Private Space, which will basically be Android's native version of Samsung's Secure Folder feature. I fully enabled this feature to show it off in this article.

LineageOS 21 supports Pixel 2 and later devices, alongside tablet and foldable
LineageOS

LineageOS 21 just became official with support for more than 100 devices at launch. As expected, LineageOS has been actively supporting every Pixel device in existence, and for this year, they also support Pixel Tablet & Pixel Fold.

This update isn't that small though, as developers have been working hard to bring Material You support into their open-source applications. The most noticeable one would be their new gallery app, Glimpse, Aperture camera app also has received a few neat features, with a few applications getting an overhaul look too.

While Android 14 support for Pixel 1 is currently WIP, the rest of the lineup will be getting the latest LineageOS 21. Though announced today, it will take up to one week before your device starts receiving it. This is not only for Pixels though, there are 80 more devices on the build roster, with many more community builds out there.

Android 15 Developer Preview 1 is HERE! Google is giving us an early look at the next major Android version set to release this fall. Here’s what Google says is new in Android 15 DP1:

- Android 15 ships with the latest version of the AdServices module, which houses the Privacy Sandbox on Android APIs. Specifically, it incorporates SDK Extension version 10.

- Android 15 also ships the latest version of the Android Health module, which houses the Health Connect by Android feature. SDK Extension version 10 adds support for new data types across fitness, nutrition, and more.

- The FileIntegrityManager class is adding new APIs that are backed by the Linux kernel’s fs-verity feature. The new setupFsVerity(java.io.File) method lets apps protect files with custom cryptographic signatures which can be checked via the new getFsVerityDigest(java.io.File) method to ensure they haven’t been tampered with or corrupted. This improves security by protecting against unauthorized file modifications that could compromise app functionality or data.

- Partial screen sharing lets users share or record just an app window rather than the entire device screen. This feature is already live as of Android 14 QPR2 on Pixel but will be more broadly available on other devices with Android 15. Developers can customize the partial screen sharing experience through media projection callback methods.

- Android 15 adds a new Camera2 API that lets apps boost the brightness of the camera preview (CameraCharacteristics#CONTROL_LOW_LIGHT_BOOST_INFO_LUMINANCE_RANGE). It also enables precise control of flash intensity in both SINGLE (CameraCharacteristics#FLASH_SINGLE_STRENGTH_DEFAULT_LEVEL) and TORCH (CameraCharacteristics#FLASH_TORCH_STRENGTH_DEFAULT_LEVEL) modes when capturing images

- Android 15 extends Universal Midi Packages (UMP) support to virtual MIDI apps, enabling composition apps to control synthesizer apps as a virtual MIDI 2.0 device.

Android 15 Developer Preview 1 is HERE! Google is giving us an early look at the next major Android version set to release this fall. Here’s what Google says is new in Android 15 DP1: - Android 15 ships with the latest version of the AdServices module, which…
- Android 15 improves the Android Dynamic Performance Framework (APDF) by adding a new power-efficiency mode that lets apps hint that their associated threads should prefer power saving over performance, reporting GPU and CPU work durations to allow the system to adjust frequencies together, and thermal headroom thresholds to interpret possible thermal throttling status based on headroom prediction.

- Finally, Android 15 adds new OpenJDK APIs related to NIO buffers, streams, security, and more. These APIs will be available on Android 12+ devices through a Google Play System Update to the ART Mainline module.

That’s everything Google mentioned in their press release! There’s of course a lot more that’s new, so keep an eye out for my upcoming posts - I work hard to be your best source for Android OS news and won’t let you down this year as well!

(In case you’re curious: The internal dessert name for Android 15 is Vanilla Ice Cream!)

Want to download Android 15 Developer Preview 1? Here’s what you should know:

- Builds are available only for the Pixel 6, 7, or 8 series device as well as for the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet.

- You have to manually install these builds, and they’re intended for DEVELOPERS ONLY.
- Once you’ve manually installed a build, you’ll automatically get future Android 15 updates over-the-air.

- If you’re on the Android 14 QPR beta and want to try the Android 15 DP without wiping your device, you should migrate now. Otherwise, there may come a time where an Android 14 QPR beta has a newer build date than the most recent Android 15 DP, forcing you to wipe data before you can migrate.

- If you don’t have a supported Pixel, you can also try Android 15 DP1 with the Android Emulator in Android Studio.

Google recommends using the latest preview of Android Studio Jellyfish for the best development experience. Also, if you discover any issues testing the new features and APIs, leave some feedback on the Issue Tracker.
