Alleged Google Tensor G4 spotted on Geekbench 5!

A Google device codenamed as "Google Tokay" (a lizard species) has been spotted on GeekBench 5

CPU:
• 1x Cortex-X4 @ 3.1 GHz
• 3x Cortex-A720 @ 2.6GHz
• 4x Cortex-A520 @ 1.95GHz
GPU: Mali-G715 MP???

A Octa-core configuration (1+3+4)

Tensor G3 meanwhile:
1x Cortex-X3 @ 2.91GHz
4 x Cortex-A715 @ 2.37GHz
4 x Cortex-A510 @ 1.70GHz
Nona-core configuration (1+4+4)

NO Idea why the number of total CPU cores is decreased from 9 to 8

NOTE: Tensor G4 is still in testing likely, thus the Geekbench 5 scores are NOT the final scores

Tensor G4 (Zuma-pro) will be manufactured by Samsung Foundry on its 4nm LPP+ process likely
(same node on which Exynos 2400 has been manufactured)

Android 15 DP1 is coming on Thursday, according to a Googler (H/T 9to5Google).

If you want to know what's coming in Android 15, check out the posts I've done for Android Authority and Android Police or my threads on what's new in the Android 14 QPR betas.

One of the features I'm most excited for is Private Space, which will basically be Android's native version of Samsung's Secure Folder feature. I fully enabled this feature to show it off in this article.

LineageOS 21 supports Pixel 2 and later devices, alongside tablet and foldable
LineageOS

LineageOS 21 just became official with support for more than 100 devices at launch. As expected, LineageOS has been actively supporting every Pixel device in existence, and for this year, they also support Pixel Tablet & Pixel Fold.

This update isn't that small though, as developers have been working hard to bring Material You support into their open-source applications. The most noticeable one would be their new gallery app, Glimpse, Aperture camera app also has received a few neat features, with a few applications getting an overhaul look too.

While Android 14 support for Pixel 1 is currently WIP, the rest of the lineup will be getting the latest LineageOS 21. Though announced today, it will take up to one week before your device starts receiving it. This is not only for Pixels though, there are 80 more devices on the build roster, with many more community builds out there.

Android 15 Developer Preview 1 is HERE! Google is giving us an early look at the next major Android version set to release this fall. Here’s what Google says is new in Android 15 DP1:

- Android 15 ships with the latest version of the AdServices module, which houses the Privacy Sandbox on Android APIs. Specifically, it incorporates SDK Extension version 10.

- Android 15 also ships the latest version of the Android Health module, which houses the Health Connect by Android feature. SDK Extension version 10 adds support for new data types across fitness, nutrition, and more.

- The FileIntegrityManager class is adding new APIs that are backed by the Linux kernel’s fs-verity feature. The new setupFsVerity(java.io.File) method lets apps protect files with custom cryptographic signatures which can be checked via the new getFsVerityDigest(java.io.File) method to ensure they haven’t been tampered with or corrupted. This improves security by protecting against unauthorized file modifications that could compromise app functionality or data.

- Partial screen sharing lets users share or record just an app window rather than the entire device screen. This feature is already live as of Android 14 QPR2 on Pixel but will be more broadly available on other devices with Android 15. Developers can customize the partial screen sharing experience through media projection callback methods.

- Android 15 adds a new Camera2 API that lets apps boost the brightness of the camera preview (CameraCharacteristics#CONTROL_LOW_LIGHT_BOOST_INFO_LUMINANCE_RANGE). It also enables precise control of flash intensity in both SINGLE (CameraCharacteristics#FLASH_SINGLE_STRENGTH_DEFAULT_LEVEL) and TORCH (CameraCharacteristics#FLASH_TORCH_STRENGTH_DEFAULT_LEVEL) modes when capturing images

- Android 15 extends Universal Midi Packages (UMP) support to virtual MIDI apps, enabling composition apps to control synthesizer apps as a virtual MIDI 2.0 device.

Android 15 Developer Preview 1 is HERE! Google is giving us an early look at the next major Android version set to release this fall. Here’s what Google says is new in Android 15 DP1: - Android 15 ships with the latest version of the AdServices module, which…
- Android 15 improves the Android Dynamic Performance Framework (APDF) by adding a new power-efficiency mode that lets apps hint that their associated threads should prefer power saving over performance, reporting GPU and CPU work durations to allow the system to adjust frequencies together, and thermal headroom thresholds to interpret possible thermal throttling status based on headroom prediction.

- Finally, Android 15 adds new OpenJDK APIs related to NIO buffers, streams, security, and more. These APIs will be available on Android 12+ devices through a Google Play System Update to the ART Mainline module.

That’s everything Google mentioned in their press release! There’s of course a lot more that’s new, so keep an eye out for my upcoming posts - I work hard to be your best source for Android OS news and won’t let you down this year as well!

(In case you’re curious: The internal dessert name for Android 15 is Vanilla Ice Cream!)

Want to download Android 15 Developer Preview 1? Here’s what you should know:

- Builds are available only for the Pixel 6, 7, or 8 series device as well as for the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet.

- You have to manually install these builds, and they’re intended for DEVELOPERS ONLY.
- Once you’ve manually installed a build, you’ll automatically get future Android 15 updates over-the-air.

- If you’re on the Android 14 QPR beta and want to try the Android 15 DP without wiping your device, you should migrate now. Otherwise, there may come a time where an Android 14 QPR beta has a newer build date than the most recent Android 15 DP, forcing you to wipe data before you can migrate.

- If you don’t have a supported Pixel, you can also try Android 15 DP1 with the Android Emulator in Android Studio.

Google recommends using the latest preview of Android Studio Jellyfish for the best development experience. Also, if you discover any issues testing the new features and APIs, leave some feedback on the Issue Tracker.

Here’s the current release schedule for Android 15:

- Developer Preview 1 (today)
- Developer Preview 2 (March)
- Beta 1 (April)
- Beta 2 (May)
- Beta 3 (June)
- Beta 4 (July)
- Final Release (TBD)

Android 15 will reach Platform Stability with Beta 3 in June 2024. Platform Stability is when SDK/NDK APIs, internal APIs, and app-facing system behaviors are finalized.

The Android 14 QPR program is still running but will conclude with QPR3’s stable release in June.

LineageOS 21 now supports every Pixel device in existence
Gerrit Code Review (2)

LineageOS accidentally broke a milestone recently. Pixel 1 & Pixel 4 series were just added to the LineageOS 21 build roster a moment ago, completing the lineup with every Pixel device supported & on the latest branch for the first time in history. Though on September 7, 2023, Pixel 1 series were promoted to LineageOS 20, but Pixel Fold & Tablet were already out for a while.

Fun fact: The first day when Pixels got supported by LineageOS (✓ means complete support for the Pixel lineup at that time):
• Pixel 1 (15.1): July 31, 2018
• Pixel 2 (16.0): August 31, 2020
• Pixel 3 (17.1): August 10, 2020
• Pixel 3a & 4 (17.1): September 2, 2020
• Pixel 4a & 5 (18.1): March 30, 2021 (✓)
• Pixel 5a (19.1): September 21, 2021 (✓)
• Pixel 6, 6a & 7 (20): February 17, 2023 (2) (✓)
• Pixel 7a (20): June 21, 2023 (✓ for phone)
• Pixel Tablet (20): July 26, 2023
• Pixel 8 & Fold (21): February 14, 2024 (✓)

Google Search is bringing Pixel exclusive Hold for Me feature to both iOS and other Android

Google Search Labs is testing a new “Talk to a Live Representative” feature that will place a call to a business on your behalf, navigate through its phone tree, wait on hold, and then notify you when a real human is being available for you to speak to.

This feature is similar to Pixel's exclusive 'Hold for Me' feature and better than it even as it will actually call a business on your behalf

To “Request a call,” you first specify a reason for why you’re calling.
You then provide your phone number, with Google sending SMS updates. The Request page will note the estimated wait time. After submitting, you can cancel the request at any time.

Supported businesses include a selection of US airlines, telcos, retailers, insurance, and other service companies.

The experimental feature is available in the US via the Google app on iOS and Android and Chrome desktop too

JUST IN: Snapdragon-powered Pixel Phones are Dead

The Pixel 5 & 5a are the last batch of Snapdragon-powered Pixels & now Android 15 will NOT be supported by them

Android 15 only supports Pixels released after late 2021 aka the Tensor-powered Pixel series, sealing the fate of Snapdragon chip support

In our previous poll, 58% of users voted that Google should switch to Qualcomm but, dumping the Qualcomm Snapdragon was one of the BEST decisions Google ever made.

Google can now have full control over the SoC which wasn't possible with Snapdragon
Tensor isn't perfect at all, but its getting better with time

Since the Snapdragon-pixels support will end soon, it will become more difficult for Custom ROMs users to steal pixel features since Google will tie features to the Tensor chip as seen with the 'Best Take' & 'Unblur' features of Google Photos

Google might remove Qualcomm DSP support, thereby making processing speed on GCAM Mods trash, thus taking much more time to process images

Google is preparing to fully remove support for non-A/B updates from Android, leaving A/B updates as the only officially supported OTA update mechanism moving forward.

However, this won't stop certain device makers from continuing to use non-A/B as they can either use their own implementation or just revert Google's changes. Google would need to actually mandate the use of A/B through the CDD or GMS licensing, which they've tried to do but ended up reneging.

If you want to learn more about how Android's update schemes work, check out this article I wrote (though note that Google ended up not going forward with this requirement).

Google Pixel Fold 2 Renders
Source

The internal display will measure 7.9" (8.1-inch with corners)
The outer display however will be 6.4" (6.6-inch with corners)

This indicates that Pixel Fold 2 display will be bigger than that of Pixel Fold 1
Also, Google might use the same flagship display that will be used on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6

Additionally, Pixel Fold 2 internal display will also feature a Under Display Camera (UDC) as visible in the top right corner in the renders

The camera module arranged in a rectangular cutout on the rear side consists of 3 cameras (wide + Ultrawide+ Telephoto) along with a 4th unnamed sensor.

Dimensions
Folded: 155.2 x 77.1 x 10.54mm
Unfolded: 155.2 x 150.2 x 5.27mm

Pixel Fold 2 will feature the upcoming Google Tensor G4 SoC with 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and faster UFS 4.0 storage.

Pixel Fold 2 is expected to debut in October, 2024 along with the Pixel 9 series with Android 15 out of the box

Google’s latest Android Feature Drop for February 2024 is here, bringing you 9 new features to help you stay productive. These include:

1) You can now chat with Gemini right in the Google Messages app on Android! You can ask Gemini to do things like draft messages, come up with a joke, and more. This is available for beta users in English.

2) Android Auto can now use AI to summarize notifications. AI will also suggest relevant replies and actions, so you can just tap a button to send a message, share your ETA, or start a call. (This was announced at Galaxy Unpacked last month but should be rolling out now.)

3) Lookout’s Image Q&A feature is now rolling out globally in English! This feature left closed beta last September and was available in the US, UK, and Canada. Image Q&A uses AI to auto-generate denoscriptions of images.

4) Last October, Google launched Lens in Maps (formerly Search with Live View). This feature uses AI and augmented reality to help you find information about nearby stores. Now, this feature has been upgraded with screen reader support, so you can point your phone’s camera at your surroundings and have TalkBack read the place’s information out loud.

5) You can now add handwritten annotations to documents in Google Docs from your phone or tablet using your finger or stylus. You can choose from a selection of markup tools like different pen colors and highlighters.

6) Spotify Connect devices will finally appear in Android’s media output switcher! Google announced this way back at CES 2023, but it’s finally going to roll out starting this week.

7) The Fitbit app now pulls in your health and fitness data from other apps that support Android’s Health Connect platform. This means you can see your data from services like AllTrails, Oura Ring, and MyFitnessPal, all within the Fitbit app. In the “You” tab, you can see data from connected apps next to your Fitbit data. In the “Today” tab, you can see data like exercise, steps, calories burned, and more from Health Connect-compatible apps.
