Today during his speech to the Polish special assembly, Zelensky mentioned the 2010 Smolensk airplane crash.

"We remember the terrible Smolensk catastrophe and the circumstances under which it was investigated. And that those who knew everything about it were silent."

The Smolensk disaster is the single most controversial issue in Polish society.

Half of Poland believes the Russians were behind it and that the liberal leader, Tusk, helped cover it up. The other half believe it was an accident. The two sides have been passionatly arguing about this for over 10 years and it was a big factor in the election that brought PiS into power. The leader of PiS is the twin brother of the Polish president who died in the crash and believes the Russians did it.

Zelensky bringing up Smolensk will have angered a lot of Polish liberals, although it will likely not be voiced. A polish liberal told me this makes her trust Ukraine less
