Title: Multimodal Operation of Smart Intersections.

> Denoscription: This PhD research project aims to develop a model/platform that can utilise real-time feeds of all mode movements from our smart intersections and optimise the signal control to minimise safety risks, all while maintaining an efficient flow of vehicular traffic at the network level.

Urban intersections are major bottlenecks in our transport network. Effective control and efficient operations of our intersections play a significant role in:

Reducing traffic congestion and its negative impact on our economy and environment, and;Improving roadway safety not only for private cars but also for all other modes of transport, including vulnerable road users.

In the current research within the Australian Integrated Multimodal Ecosystem (AIMES), Melbourne University has installed advanced mobility sensing devices at multiple intersections within a 6 square-kilometre zone in the Melbourne central district.

These sensors include:

High-definition cameras connected to edge-computing devices
Induction loops
LIDAR sensors
DSRC devices
Mobile Wi-Fi detectors
Bluetooth readers

Collectively, these will enable us to detect, classify, and register vehicular traffic movements (including trams, buses, trucks) and vulnerable road users (pedestrian and cyclists) crossing or waiting at intersections with a high precision and in real-time..

The PhD candidate works within the project "Scale-bridging simulation of dynamic wetting processes using the phase-field method". The central goal is to gain a fundamental understanding of the local transport processes at the contact line during scale-bridging dynamic wetting processes using DNS. The focus is on scale-spanning wetting processes of geometrically complex substrates (pores, fibres), whose dynamics are significantly influenced by several subprocesses on different scales. One particular focus is on the coupling of the continuum phase-field solver (OpenFOAM) with a molecular dynamics solver (LAMMPS) using object-oriented programming paradigms in C++ towards a massively parallelized hybrid-atomistic-continuum (HAC) method.

The overall theme of the PhD project is to promote the digital transformation of the process chain in catalysts manufacturing. This chain entails several steps including mixing of reacting ingredients into a slurry (paste) as well as a subsequent extrusion process from which catalysts extrudates are produced. The PhD project evolves around three themes regarding this chain: (i) Collecting and handling data from real catalyst production lines, (ii) performing data analytics on this data with proper methods including machine learning, deep learning and process simulation models based on first-principles (iii) deploying the models in production line and coupling with control strategies to support implementation.
