In order to go beyond the 3rd dimension and create shape-morphing 4D scaffolds, which are able to change their geometrical / mechanical properties at the micro- and nano-scale, we need to design and fabricate new types of biocompatible metamaterials. As part of this project, you will:
Develop and conduct research on two-photon polymerization (2PP) for the realization of shape morphing 4D micron-sized structures.Use and develop Bayesian optimization and Deep Learning strategies to design the 4D structures.Perform high-fidelity computational verification of mechanical and morphological properties of the micro-structures through non-linear spline-based finite element analysis.Culture neuronal cells on the developed scaffolds.Experimentally characterize the mechanical, morphological and immunofluorescent features of both the scaffolds and the cellular networks.Write a doctoral dissertation, publish results in renowned peer reviewed journals and present research at international conferences.
