PhD fellowship available at Coppélia Research Lab (NJIT)
The Coppélia Research Lab at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) seeks a highly qualified student for a PhD fellowship with a starting date in the fall semester of 2019.
The ideal candidate should be a highly motivated individual with outstanding writing skills and a strong background in math, mechanics, and computer programming.
The objectives of the doctoral project can include (but are not limited to):
Development of a balance control algorithm for lower-limbs robotic exoskeletons to assist the mobility and rehabilitation of people with impaired motor functions
Design of theoretical, simulation, and experimental models to study the contact interaction of human and robot extremities (soft and rigid) with the environment
Formulation of quantitative assessment outcomes for the balance stability of legged robots and human subjects with impaired, normal, and exceptional balancing skills
Each project will consist of three fundamental components: theoretical modeling, computer simulation, and experiments. Experimental work will involve robotic platforms (e.g., Center for Rehabilitation Robotics), human subjects (in collaboration with various clinical facilities), and state of the art motion capture and makerspace facilities.
The selected candidate will enter a joint PhD program between the Department of Biomedical Engineering at NJIT and the School of Graduate Studies Biomedical and Health Sciences at Rutgers University (NJIT-Rutgers Joint Ph.D. Program). The prospective student is expected to work on collaborative projects with NYU, Università di Roma la Sapienza (Italy), Politecnico di Bari (Italy), etc., to travel regularly, and possibly to spend a period of study abroad.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Candidates applying for the position must hold a MS degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, or Electrical engineering (or in Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or similar fields) with a minimum GPA of 3.50/4.00. A background in applied mathematics, mechanics fundamentals, algorithms and programming (included but not limited to C, C++, Matlab) is imperative. Some background in advanced dynamics, robot mechanics, control, mechatronics, and viscoelastic materials is highly desired. Females and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply. Selected candidates will be asked to follow up with the official application through the university admission system, which will require: provision of the GRE scores (minimum 157 for quantitative score) for all applicants and a TOEFL or IELTS score for international applicants.
If you are interested in the position, please email Dr. Carlotta Mummolo (cmummolo@njit.edu) using the following subject line in your email: “PhD Application COPPELIA lab (NJIT) – LastName FirstName”. Please attach the following documents to your email (please use cloud platforms for files over 5 MB:)
A cover letter of 1 page describing yourself and why you are a good fit for this job
Your most updated CV
Two reference letters
An unofficial copy of your graduate and undergraduate trannoscripts
3 representative publications or reports (if available)
Any proof of programming project (bits of code, websites, etc.)
Review of applications will begin immediately. For full consideration, kindly submit all application material by March 31, 2019. The position will be open until filled.

Self Assembly Nanomaterial Laboratory in the Department of Polymer Engineering at Pukyong National University invites applications for a graduate degree (Ph.D. program) in the field of nanomaterials. In this laboratory, we are struggling for designing nanostructured materials composed of polymers and inorganic nanoparticles. In our approach, polymeric materials provide a number of flexibilities in the nanostructures in terms of size, shape, and chemical affinity, while inorganic nanoparticles offer specific functionalities. We are currently focusing on the optical, electrical, and catalytic aspects of metal nanoparticles in developing high-performance polymer composites.
