Geomechanics position at Imperial College

Applications are invited for a one year full-time researcher based in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London in the area of discrete element modelling and computational fluid dynamics. The successful applicant will join the Geotechnics research group as a member of research staff and will conduct research on an EPSRC funded project ennoscriptd “Particle-scale investigation of seepage induced geotechnical instability(EP/P010393/1)”. The work will be conducted under the supervision of Professor Catherine O’Sullivan.

The primary focus of the proposed research is to use coupled discrete element method (DEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to improve understanding of seepage induced internal instability. The particular mechanism of interest sometimes referred to as suffusion. The researcher will be involved in code development, setting up and running discrete element method simulations and interpreting the results.

The start date for this research post is July 1 2019 (with limited flexibility for moving it) and the salary will be based on the level of relevant experience of the successful candidate.

This is a fixed term appointment for up to 12 months. Applications will be considered from both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral researchers. Please contact Catherine O’Sullivan for further details (cath.osullivan@imperial.ac.uk, telephone +44 20 759 46117).

Job denoscription:
Scientific research and the acquisition of third-party funding at the working group of Applied Statistics. The prospective candidate will develop statistical methods that build a bridge between machine learning (e.g. deep learning) techniques and advanced Bayesian approaches. Depending on the candidate’s academic level the position is initially fixed for 24 months with intended extension by further 12 months at a 2/3 part-time employment (at a PhD level) or a 12 months full-time position with intended extension by further 6 months (at a Postdoc level). Opportunities for own scientific qualification (PhD)/career development are provided, see
https://www.wiwi.hu-berlin.de/en/academic-career/aca-demic-career?set_language=en for an overview and further links.

Job requirements:
Outstanding completed Master or PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science (specialisation in Statistics/Mathematics), Econometrics or a related field of research required. Furthermore, advanced knowledge in at least one of machine or statistical learning, computational methods, Bayesian statistics and flexible regression models is necessary. Good mathematical skills and experience in scientific programming with Matlab, R, C/C++, Python or similar required. The prospective candidate is expected to have a high interest in the development of statistical methodology and its application in various ap-plied areas. We expect good communication skills and proficiency in written and spoken English.

Opportunities:
We offer a vibrant, interdisciplinary environment of ambitious (young) researchers and a strong international network, including established collaborations in Singapore and Australia. The position offers potential to closely work with several applied sciences. Information about the research profile and further contact details can be found through the following link: https://hu.berlin.de/NK

Please send your application - including a motivation letter, an academic curriculum vitae, list of publications (for the Postdoc position), university degrees/trannoscripts, further certificates and two reference letters - via Email as a single pdf file (no larger than 10 MB) to Prof. Dr. Nadja Klein, nadja.klein@hu-berlin.de. Further enquiries can also be ad-dressed to her. The review of applications will begin on the 10th of June and continue until the position is filled.
