#PhD and #postdoc openings in the group of Ivan Dokmanić
University of Basel, Switzerland / University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (on leave)
I am looking for creative, open-minded PhD students and postdocs to join my group at the University of Basel in Switzerland. Most of the openings are funded by the ERC Starting Grant "SWING" (Signals, Waves, and Learning---A Data-Driven Paradigm for Wave-Based Inverse Problems).
This project threads the interface of machine learning, wave physics and imaging. It addresses both the theory of learning for inverse problems, especially those arising in wave-based imaging, and cutting-edge applications. It also touches upon modern signal processing topics such as unlabeled and non-linear sampling, randomized sensing, and corresponding invariant computational structures. Applications include molecular, medical, and seismic imaging.
Multiple positions are available to work on the different facets of this story. The postdoctoral openings include supervision of student projects and opportunities to be involved in teaching. Ideal candidates have a strong background in math, stats, ee, computer science, physics, strong academic record and some prior research experience. They can also write good code in python, MATLAB, and C++, ideally more than one.
University of Basel is the oldest university in Switzerland with an exceptionally strong presence in math, imaging, and life sciences including the relevant high-end experimental facilities. The math department is associated with giants like the Bernoulli brothers, Leonhard Euler, or more recently Walter Gautschi. Working in my group includes plentiful opportunities for collaboration in Europe (EPFL, ETHZ in Switzerland, ENS Paris, ENS Lyon, TU Munich) and in the United States (UIUC, Rice, MIT), workshops, conferences, summer and winter schools, ... It also includes a friendly, fun, and productive lab atmosphere.
(In addition to the above positions I have a few openings in audio processing and data analytics; please ask if interested).

Deadline: ASAP
