We have a vacancy for a temporary Researcher position to conduct Earth System Modeling in the topic of land-based Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) using the Norwegian Earth System Model.
The position will be part of the Horizon Europe project RESCUE (https://rescue-climate.eu/), which comprises a large model intercomparison project to quantify the Earth system response to pathways achieving climate neutrality by CDR deployment. A special focus lies on Earth system feedbacks and aspects of reversibility and environmental risks under scenarios of temperature overshoot. The position will involve conduct simulations with the Norwegian Earth System Model, NorESM, perform analysis of multiple models, with a focus on the carbon cycle and the effects of afforestation and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage. The position offers the chance to be part of a dynamic team working at the frontier of Earth system science. The team is strongly involved in large international collaborations such as CMIP and IPCC.

Successful candidates will work with large datasets, hydrological/hydraulic models as well as machine learning as tools to describe natural processes, and integrate field data to understand causes and impacts of pressing environmental issues, contributing to the development of mitigation strategies to improve water quality and support decision-making.

The Department of the Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Earth Sciences at George Mason University (GMU) is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow to participate in a joint project between GMU and NOAA Climate Prediction Center (CPC) to improve the GLobal Ocean Reanalysis (GLORe) system. GLORe is a newly developed ocean and sea ice data assimilation system in support of the ocean monitoring and forecasting operation at CPC. Working with Professor Bohua Huang (GMU) and Dr. Jieshun Zhu (CPC), the postdoctoral researcher will conduct comprehensive diagnostic analyses using the GLORe reanalysis for 1979-2022 and examine the seasonal hindcasts by the NOAA United Forecast System (UFS) initialized with the GLORe products. The researcher will also carry out seasonal hindcast experiments using UFS to evaluate the impacts of the improved ocean and sea ice features in new versions of the GLORe reanalysis on the seasonal ocean and sea ice forecasts.
TERM: This position will be awarded for 1 year and may be extended by 1 additional year contingent on satisfactory performance.
QUALIFICATIONS: A PhD in climate dynamics, physical oceanography, or atmospheric science is required. Experience with running ocean or coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation models is highly desirable. Programming experience in a Unix environment with noscripting languages, as well as experience in handling big data, is recommended. The students will conduct research in resource recovery, nutrient management or environmental sustainability. The potential projects are:
Algae-based systems for resource recovery and water reuse
Partial nitritation and anammox for mainstream wastewater treatment
Biorecovery of energy and minerals from mining waste
Environmental biotechnology in energy and mineral applications
Self-motivated students with background in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, biotechnology, geosciences, mathematical modeling, or related fields are encouraged to apply. The project will involve significant landscape evolution model use and development, and as such, a student with an interest in numerical modeling and ideally some experience with programming (python preferred, but experiences with other languages are beneficial) would be ideal. While modeling and model development makes up the bulk, there are potential opportunities for the student to participate in field work in the western US, 10Be cosmogenic erosion rate analysis, hydroclimatology data analysis, and topographic analysis. NSF funded project in reconciling the geophysical observations of slow slip and tremor in subduction zones with geologic and rheological constraints. Brandon Shuck is recruiting one PhD student for an NSF-funded project investigating mantle dynamics during incipient seafloor spreading in the Atlantic Ocean using marine geophysical data. The project seeks to understand how anomalous mantle temperature, composition, and flow patterns from prior subduction & supercontinent cycle influence subsequent mid-ocean ridge processes. The student will have the opportunity to sail on the R/V Marcus Langseth for a 42-day cruise to acquire new marine seismic data in the western Atlantic, spanning the first ~50 Myr of seafloor spreading recording the initial breakup of Pangea. The student will analyze these data as part of their dissertation to constrain the evolution of oceanic lithosphere and conduct petrologic models of mantle melting and crustal accretion to infer the asthenospheric conditions during upwelling beneath the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Experience in inversion and interpretation of marine seismic data, quantitative skills, as well as programming in shell/python is preferred. However, general enthusiasm and interest in studying tectonic processes with geophysical data is the most important. Interested students should contact Brandon Shuck (bshuck@lsu.edu).
