🏔 2 PhD Positions in Glacier Geophysics at the University of Lausanne 🏔
I am happy to announce two PhD openings as part of the Drone Radar for Alpine Glacier ObservatioN (DRAGON 🐉) project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation SNSF. This project builds on our recent and exciting work on high-resolution, high-density, 3D and 4D surveying of alpine glaciers using a newly developed drone-based ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system. PhD 1 will focus on characterizing and monitoring steep, inaccessible glaciers to enhance our understanding of the physical processes driving ice avalanches. PhD 2 will concentrate on mapping and monitoring englacial and subglacial hydrological networks, investigating seasonal and interannual changes to advance glacier hydrology research. Successful applicants will have a strong quantitative and computer programming background, and hold a Master’s degree in geophysics, physics, engineering, or a related quantitative discipline. A passion for conducting multi-day fieldwork in remote and challenging alpine environments is also essential.
I would very much appreciate if you could share this opportunity with your network or anyone who might be interested! 🙏

A PhD student at Montana State University
Topic: Permafrost Evolution and Geochemistry
This project investigates the age and geochemistry of ice and sediment in subarctic soils and the associated impacts on carbon storage. The PhD student will combine cutting-edge geochemical measurements with field data to quantify permafrost evolution from over tens of thousands of years ago to modern day. This research will shed light on fundamental geologic, biogeochemical, and hydrologic processes that control the resilience and vulnerability of ice and carbon in permafrost landscapes.
Candidates should email Drs. Stephanie Ewing (stephanie.ewing@montana.edu) and Jean Dixon (jean.dixon@montana.edu) with the subject “Permafrost PhD Applicant.” Include a CV/resume and denoscription of your research background, interest in the project, and career goals. In addition to emailing, formal applications must be submitted to MSU by December 15th.

A PhD Position at Newcastle University
Topic: Representing runout in landslide nowcasts to improve disaster information and response
The aim of the project is to improve the predictive skill of coseismic landslide models, both in terms of how we model landslide initiation and how we represent runout and associated hazard. The student will be based at Newcastle University and supervised by Dave Milledge (Newcastle) and Alex Densmore (Durham).
Detailed information on the project, as well as how to apply, is available in the link.
Non-UK applicants need to get in touch before 9 December 2024, however, because the number of awards to international students is limited. Please contact Dave (David.Milledge@newcastle.ac.uk) or Alex (a.l.densmore@dur.ac.uk) for more information.

Dear all,
My lab at New Mexico Tech is recruiting a 3-year postdoctoral researcher to work on a project in collaboration with Dr. Dalei Hao at the DOE Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Start date is flexible, early 2025 is preferred.
Objective of the project is to improve large-scale snow simulations in Earth System Models by i) investigating the spatial variability of snow cover over mountains / complex terrain regions, ii) investigating how snow grain shape and albedo change with snow aging, and iii) studying the space-time variability of snow droughts.
The candidate should be interested in the physical processes related to hydrology, cryosphere, and climate science. A strong quantitative background in numerical methods, statistics, and programming is desired. Previous experience working with Earth System Models is highly welcome.
Interested candidates should contact me (enrico.zorzetto@nmt.edu) to arrange a virtual interview and learn more about the research project. In your email, please include i) your CV, ii) a cover letter describing your previous research experience, relevant skills and research interests, and iii) a list of publications and software or data products.
Next week I will be in Washington, DC for the AGU Fall Meeting, and I will be available to meet interested candidates there.
