International Climate Protection Fellowship
For prospective leaders and postdocs from developing countries
The Polar Geophysics group at the University of Maine seeks a Ph.D. student to contribute to a project “Impacts of spatial-temporal precipitation, snowpack properties, and snowmelt variability on alpine landscapes and runoff”. This project is based at the University of Maine under the direction of Seth Campbell, Peter Koons, and Chris Gerbi, with collaborators from the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, University of Alaska Fairbanks, University of Alaska Southeast, University of Colorado, and University of Portland. The anticipated start date is Fall 2025, but an earlier start is possible.
The successful candidate will be part of a large team of faculty and graduate students. The available assistantship, with an annual stipend of $30,000 as well as tuition and health insurance coverage, encompasses research in direct support of a dissertation as well as broader project support such as field assistance and equipment management. For the dissertation focus, we seek a candidate who can merge physics-based with machine learning techniques that quantify changing surface properties and slope stability in alpine and other frozen-ground regions, particularly in southern and central Alaska and in New England. We will develop the specific research project after the student is on board. We expect candidates to show evidence of their ability or promise to:
Use machine learning on watershed-scale multi-faceted datasets
Manage data effectively
Apply continuum mechanics to explore stress and material behavior under changing climate conditions to landscape evolution
Perform geologic and geophysical field research in cold environments
Work collaboratively in a group setting
Effectively communicate in written, graphical, and oral forms
The Polar Geophysics research group sits in both the School of Earth and Climate Sciences and the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine. We have a vibrant and robust graduate student population with broad geographic and disciplinary backgrounds. To begin the selection process, please submit pdf files of your CV and letter of interest addressing the above expectations using this form. We will read all applications submitted by January 12th, and expect to contact any candidates under further consideration soon thereafter. Further steps for selected candidates will include an interview and formal application to the University of Maine. Please contact polargeophysics-group@maine.edu with any questions.

Dear all,
Two post-doctoral fellowship programs are currently open for
applications in Brest - France:
https://en.ifremer.fr/Research-Technology/Scientific-strategy/Join-Ifremer-for-your-Post-Doc
(application deadline: 27th of January 2025)
https://isblue.fr/tous-les-appels/post-doctoral-fellowship/ (application
deadline: 31st of March 2025)
On behalf of the Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratory of IFREMER, I invite
potential applicants interested in the following topics to contact me
(alan.tassin@ifremer.fr) in order to discuss about a potential research
project in line with our research interests :
- Marine Hydrodynamics
- Marine Renewable Energy technologies (Offshore and floating wind,
Tidal energy, Wave energy converters)
- Hydroelasticity
- Met-ocean conditions and climate change impact on Marine Renewable
Energy (ressource assesment and design)
Our research activity is oriented towards the development of innovative
experimental approaches in relation with the experimental facilities of
Ifremer in Brest (a deep-water wave tank, a wave and current flume, a
wave flume and a small-scale sea test site):
https://rd-technologiques.ifremer.fr/R-D-Technologiques/Laboratoires-et-Service/Laboratoire-Hydrodynamique-Marine-LHyMar.
Applicants with a numerical background and interested in developing
tools to support the experimental work (e.g. numerical wave tank,
numerical wave-structure interaction models) are also welcome.
The aim of these fellowships is to attract talented young researchers
from other countries (see the mobility rules) for a research stay of 2
to 3 years and to initiate collaborations with international research
groups (typically the group where the applicant has worked before). The
same research project can be submitted to both fellowship programs, if
the eligibility conditions are fulfilled.
Note that these two fellowship programs are competitive and therefore
applicants should have a good track record of publication (minimum 2 to
3 research articles during his/her PhD).
Would you mind forwarding this e-mail to potential applicants?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Best regards,
Alan Tassin
