At The Nature Conservancy, we are looking for an Ecosystem Resilience Scientist with experience studying climate impacts on ecosystems who can lead in curating, developing, and integrating climate data/projections into our scientific and conservation work across the Conservancy. The ideal candidate will have a track record of research, publication, and application of climate data/projections to studying climate impacts on ecosystems across multiple sectors and geographies. This includes experience using CMIP6 output, as well as regional model simulations and statistically downscaled projections to conduct quantitative analyses across a variety of geographic regions and applications.

The project investigates the causes of decadal-scale changes in groundwater quality in Alberta. The successful candidate will use approaches including statistical and geospatial analyses of provincial-scale groundwater quality and land use datasets from the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute (ABMI) to identify land use impacts on the quality of shallow groundwater. The Investigations will focus on areas where increasing trends in nitrate and chloride have been found in shallow groundwater (<150 m). In combination with isotopic and geochemical data, the research team led by the post-doc will assess where anthropogenic impacts on shallow groundwater have occurred and which land use changes have facilitated change.
The science is enabled by a provincial-scale historical groundwater quality dataset with over >6M results and the ABMI Human Footprint Inventory with >5M polygons delineated for >100 feature types from SPOT6 satellite imagery. Human footprint occupies 31% of Alberta, with agriculture covering 21%. Most of the human footprint in central and southern Alberta is a result of the province's farming legacy since the late 1800s. Previous studies in Alberta have shown the effects of agricultural land use on shallow groundwater contaminants including local changes in nitrate and chloride concentrations where confined animal feeding operations impacted groundwater quality from manure application at the land surface. While a province-wide picture of groundwater quality variations is emerging very recently, there has not yet an analysis of how temporal trends relate to land use changes throughout the last decades.

We are looking for a PhD candidate for the interdisciplinary PhD Cohort SEESAW (Societal and environmental impacts of complex extremes in a changing world). This is to bring to your attention the call for application to the 2-year MSc in Environmental Engineering of the University of Trento is open to international students with a BSc in Civil and/or Environmental Engineering.
The call for non-EU candidates is open and closes on 6th March 2025 at 12:00 noon (CET). Fees (up to 4'500 €/year) can be fully or partially waived, and scholarships are available to top scored candidates: 7'200 € per year for male and 8'500 € for female students (for the first year, subject to a successful performance to get the same amount in the second year).
The programme is organized in four tracks:

🚨 Exciting Call for Master Thesis Students
Hydrogeology Group, Freie Universität Berlin
The Hydrogeology Group at Freie Universität Berlin invites motivated MSc students to undertake research on two exciting thesis projects under the mentorship of Majid Taie Semiromi. These projects are part of ongoing research on hydrogeological and hydrological processes in the Quillow Watershed in Northeastern Brandenburg.
Proposed Topics:
🏞 1) Assessment of Kettle Holes’ Impacts on Water Components of the Quillow Watershed in the Northeast of Brandenburg
This thesis aims to evaluate the influence of kettle holes on the hydrological and geochemical components of the Quillow Watershed. The study will take advantage of a hydrological model (preferably the SWAT+ model) to better understand the role of these unique landscape features in regional hydrology.
💧 2) Characterizing and Quantifying the Interactions Between Kettle Holes and Groundwater Using Stable Water Isotopes Analysis: An Application to the Northeastern Brandenburg
This thesis will focus on applying stable water isotope methods to investigate and quantify the hydrological connectivity between kettle holes and groundwater systems. This research is critical for understanding groundwater recharge and the ecological significance of kettle holes in the region.
Candidate Profile:
We are looking for MSc students who are:
Enrolled in a relevant program (e.g., Hydrogeology, Geosciences, Environmental Sciences, or related fields).
Passionate about water resource research.
Familiar with hydrogeological methods and hydrological modeling (e.g. SWAT), stable isotope analysis, or willing to learn these techniques.
Proficient in using GIS tools, with a sufficient knowledge of using a programming language (e.g., R, Python).

My lab at New Mexico Tech is recruiting a 3-year postdoctoral researcher to work on a project in collaboration with Dr. Dalei Hao at the DOE Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Start date is flexible, early 2025 is preferred.
Objective of the project is to improve large-scale snow simulations in Earth System Models by i) investigating the spatial variability of snow cover over mountains / complex terrain regions, ii) investigating how snow grain shape and albedo change with snow aging, and iii) studying the space-time variability of snow droughts.
The candidate should be interested in the physical processes related to hydrology, cryosphere, and climate science. A strong quantitative background in numerical methods, statistics, and programming is desired. Previous experience working with Earth System Models is highly welcome.
