Dear Colleagues-
I would like to call your attention to a postdoc opportunity TNC and UPenn just posted - the postdoc would be mentored by Prof. M Mann at UPenn and Dr. N Wolff at TNC.
Sustainability and Conservation Science Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania in partnership with The Nature Conservancy
Application deadline for 2025: Friday, February 14, 2025
Project Area: International research that informs climate adaptation interventions
Adoption of forest-based natural climate solutions is stymied by concerns around the “permanence” or durability of these interventions. Yet forest-based natural climate solutions are also essential for staving off the worst of climate change. Forests face increasing risks as the climate warms, but these risks are not uniform across the landscape. Science-based tools are needed to predict the likelihood and severity of carbon loss, as well as likelihood of system recovery. Such tools can help to target projects towards places that are less likely to be disturbed under future climate conditions, design projects that are more likely to be durable, and establish sufficient compensation mechanisms for any disturbances that do happen (e.g., buffer pool). We are seeking a candidate with expertise in global climate modeling, land use modeling, literature synthesis and/or forest-based carbon accounting to help advance a series of products around durability risks.
Mentor team: Prof. Michael Mann (mmann00@sas.upenn.edu), Dr. Nicholas Wolff (nicholas.wolff@tnc.org)
IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE
Ideal candidates for this fellowship are outstanding, early-career scientists who seek to improve and expand their research skills, while directing their efforts toward problems at the interface of climate, conservation, research, and people. Recognizing that science is best advanced through contributions by individuals of diverse backgrounds, we seek to attract promising researchers from varying backgrounds, races, ethnic groups, and other diverse populations whose life experiences, research experiences, and employment backgrounds will contribute significantly to their research. Applicants must have completed all requirements for their doctorate by the fellowship start date, and their PhD should have been awarded no longer than three years before the application deadline. Fellows are expected to begin their appointment by September 1, 2025.
HOW TO APPLY
Complete applications are due by Friday, February 14, 2025, and must include:
Cover letter (limited to 1 page). Applicants should describe their research experience, interests in research and conservation, long-term career goals, and illustrate how their previous experience strengthens their ability to develop and implement the proposed research.
Research proposal (limited to 2 pages; citations may be on a separate page). Applicants must engage in co-development of a research proposal with a Penn faculty member and a TNC scientist, and proof of co-development will be assessed during proposal review. Teams at TNC and Penn who are available to work with applicants, their contact information, and general research topics of interest are listed above. The proposal should
§ highlight the research question of interest,
§ clearly articulate the research approach and methods,
§ outline the project’s scientific significance, and
§ demonstrate a clear potential for delivering results for The Nature Conservancy’s global priorities.

https://whoi.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/WHOI-External/job/Postdoctoral-Investigator-in-Coastal-Wetland-Cold-Season-Dynamics_JR100155
Job Summary
The Coastal Groundwater Hydrology Team (juliaguimond.com) in the Department of Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is inviting applications for a postdoctoral researcher position on an NSF-funded Collaborative Research project. The project focuses on cold season freeze-thaw processes, groundwater flow, and carbon dynamics in New England salt marshes, to (1) understand the hydrologic functioning of marshes during winter and (2) quantify the magnitude and mechanisms through which porewater, groundwater and carbon are exported from salt marshes to the tidal channel during the cold season. This work is in collaboration with Dr. Meagan Eagle at the U.S. Geological Survey Woods Hole Center and Dr. Joseph Tamborski at Old Dominion University. We seek a postdoctoral investigator to join this interdisciplinary research team for an 18-month period with a focus on fundamental research related to cold season coastal wetland hydrology, freeze-thaw dynamics, and lateral carbon export. PhD Student Position at the University of Idaho in aqueous and sediment chemical behavior at an industrial site
Project Title: Impacts of industrial waste compositions on aqueous and solid-phase chemistry at an industrial waste disposal site at the DOE Idaho National Laboratory Naval Reactors Facility
Project Denoscription
This project will work in collaboration with USGS scientists ( https://lnkd.in/dKvAEZnH ) on contaminant mobility at The U.S. Department of Energy - Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Geochemical experiments conducted by the candidate will seek to determine the aqueous and solid-phase chemical behavior of various industrial waste chemicals in the subsurface and their potential mobility to groundwater. The student will gain valuable insights from a diverse team of collaborators on the project, including experts from the University of Idaho, the US Geological Survey, and the Idaho National Laboratory.
Applicants must be US citizens and have a Master of Science degree in environmental science, geology, earth science, hydrology, geophysics, soil chemistry, or a closely related field. Strong chemistry skills and experience in geochemical modeling are desired. Research experience in hydrology, geochemistry, soil chemistry, or fate and transport of metals is highly preferred. The student will be enrolled in the PhD degree program in either Water Resources, Environmental Science, or Soil and Land Resources.
The student will receive a monthly stipend and a tuition and fee scholarship to pursue graduate studies. The expected start date is June 2025, with first semester enrollment Fall 2025.
To apply: E-mail a statement of interest describing academic and career goals, qualifications and preparation, and a resume to Dan Strawn (dgstrawn@uidaho.edu) ( Daniel Strawn - Soil & Water Systems | University of Idaho ). The full application, which will require official trannoscripts, three letters of recommendation, and statements of goals and interests is due by February 15, 2025. Qualified candidates will be invited for online interviews. Application materials should be submitted following guidelines at https://lnkd.in/dD5Si4yk .
