Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce an opening for a research position focusing on floodplain hydrology and restoration based at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Magdeburg (DE). The project investigates practical options to increase water retention in floodplain landscapes with the goal of stabilising groundwater levels under changing climatic conditions.

Full details and application instructions at: https://recruitingapp-5128.de.umantis.com/Vacancies/3292/Denoscription/2
We would be grateful if you could circulate this announcement within your networks.
Best regards,

Marlene Dordoni

Exciting Opportunity at GFZ Helmholtz-Zentrum für Geoforschung

💼 PhD Position: Hydrological model development for geodetic applications

🔬 In this role, you will advance a numerical model of the terrestrial water cycle to meet the high-precision requirements of geodetic applications, helping to improve global studies of mass variations and Earth rotation.

You will conduct a broad set of hydrological model experiments driven by different atmospheric reanalyzes, refine process representations to better capture land-water storage variability, and assess model skill using geodetic observations.

Your work will include sensitivity analyses, uncertainty assessments, and the presentation and publication of your findings, contributing to a deeper understanding of large-scale mass transport in the Earth system.

Dear research colleagues,

The denoscription of a PhD call with noscript: "Enhancing Fluid Flow Models of Fractured Chalk Aquifers for Sustainable Energy and Environmental Protection" is available at the following links:

1.https://www.findaphd.com/phds/project/enhancing-fluid-flow-models-of-fractured-chalk-aquifers-for-sustainable-energy-and-environmental-protection/?p188102

2.https://yes-dtn.ac.uk/research/keyword/fracture-permeability/

The project is based at the University of Leeds (supervisors: Prof Jared West, Prof. Dave Healy) with Sapienza University (supervisor: Dr. Giacomo Medici) and Denmark Technical University (supervisor: Dr. Mike Welch) as project partners. There will be travel opportunities at Sapienza University in Rome to visit the external supervisor and outcrops.

The goal is accurately predicting how water, pollutants, and energy-critical fluids move through fractured chalk rock formations using innovative numerical approaches.

Best wishes,

Dr. Giacomo Medici

Research Scientist for Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Interactions under Climate Extremes (f/m/x)

Are you interested in working at the interface of soil, vegetation and atmosphere interactions? We offer you a position with the opportunity to collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment and to link field data, remote sensing and process-based or machine learning models.

As a Research Scientist for Soil–Vegetation–Atmosphere Interactions under Climate Extremes (f/m/x) you can develop and apply methods to quantify the impacts of extreme events. Of course we offer competent support for international colleagues arriving at the UFZ as well as a wide range of options for balancing work and care responsibilities through our family office. We look forward to meeting you!

PhD opportunity 🎉

Climate change is driving more frequent and intense extreme rainfall events, creating serious challenges for flood risk management across the UK. Current rainfall datasets are not fit for purpose: radar estimates can be inaccurate, and rain gauge networks, while reliable, are too sparse to capture highly localised storms. Reliable, high-resolution rainfall data is urgently needed to improve flood prediction, climate adaptation, and infrastructure resilience.

This project will tackle that challenge by developing a new blended UK precipitation dataset at high temporal (15-minute) and spatial resolution. The student will integrate data from multiple sources—including tipping bucket rain gauges, weather radar, and satellites—using robust coding and data science techniques. A comprehensive quality control framework will be built to identify and correct errors, apply bias adjustments, and assess data quality. State-of-the-art multisource blending methods will then be applied (e.g. kriging, probabilistic merging, machine learning) to combine datasets and preserve extremes. Uncertainty will be quantified explicitly, with outputs designed to inform both researchers and practitioners. The resulting dataset, open-access and user-focused, will directly support advanced flood risk modelling, hydrological predictions, and adaptation planning.

As the student, you will gain expertise in climate extremes, data science, and hydrology, working within Newcastle University’s Water and Climate Research Group and collaborating with partners such as the Environment Agency and the Floods and Droughts Research Infrastructure (FDRI). Your work will provide a critical resource for climate resilience, with direct pathways to impact in policy, industry, and society.

Job Alert Friday! 🚀

Exciting Opportunity at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE)

💼 PhD student for somatic genetics in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

🔬 In this role, you will employ targeted deep sequencing or single-cell–resolved detection of mosaic mutations with low allele frequency in human post-mortem tissue and apply advanced computational and statistical analysis methods to gain deeper insights into the role of genetic mosaics in neurodegeneration.

A further aim of this project is the development of in vitro models for somatic mutations for functional studies, as well as the design of diagnostic and data-driven approaches for ante-mortem detection of, and potential testing of therapeutic interventions against, somatic mutations in neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS.

Dear colleagues,
Please note that Science of The Total Environment (STOTEN) journal - in which some of us (including me) published in the past - has been removed from the WOS database for failing to maintain the editorial quality over time. As a result, any content published by the journal after Volume 954 (2024) is not currently indexed, and any existing gaps in content will not be backfilled.
