🌟 PhD Opportunity: Water Scarcity Governance 🌟
📍 Location: Wageningen University
📅 Apply by: August 12, 2024

Are you passionate about the social science dimensions of climate change and water scarcity? Do you want to contribute to knowledge on how everyday citizens, policymakers and water service providers are responding to Day Zero situations where water sources become critically low? Then this PhD may be for you!

Join the Wageningen Centre for Sustainability Governance as a PhD Researcher to explore diverse societal responses to hydroclimatic risks.
This role involves studying disruptions from severe droughts and examining water scarcity in varied societal contexts (e.g. USA, South Africa, India, Nepal, and Kenya). You will link risk governance with social practice theories, review literature and policy documents, map stakeholders, conduct qualitative fieldwork with everyday citizens, policy and provisioning actors, and analyse practices. You will also engage in science-policy activities and produce academic publications.

We seek candidates with a strong social science background, expertise in quantitative and qualitative methods, experience in fieldwork abroad and a Master’s in a relevant field. Strong research skills and fluency in English (CEFR C2 level) are essential.

You'll be part of the Public Administration and Policy Group @WUR and the Environmental Policy group (ENP), supervised by myself (Johanna Koehler, (PAP) and Mary Greene (ENP).

💼 Role: PhD Position in "Earth System Modeling - Past climate changes of the Atacama region"

📅 Deadline: 01.09.2024

🔬Your Mission: In this role, you will investigate past climate changes in the Atacama Desert by setting up and running paleoclimate simulations using the AWI Earth System Model (AWI-ESM) with water isotope diagnostics. You will analyze the model results to understand how major global climate transitions impacted the region's hydrological cycle. By comparing these findings with marine and terrestrial proxy data, you will develop hypotheses about regional climate changes and contribute to the scientific understanding of the Atacama's climate history.
