MS Position in Applied Invasive Aquatic Plant Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

One MS Research Assistantship is available in the Department of Biological Sciences at Minnesota State University, Mankato to study and develop herbicide recommendations for the invasive floating aquatic plant European frogbit. The primary focus of investigation will be development and conducting of submersed and foliar herbicide trials for control of European frogbit. Applicants will be a part of a research team and as such may become involved in other projects. Applicants should have strong lab and field-based research experience, as well as, excellent organizational, quantitative, and analytical skills. Interest in applied aquatic plant research is necessary.

Benefits
Funding for the position will be 12 months and contingent upon grant funding and performance.
Salary - Minimum $20,000/year

PhD Student in Integrated Economic Modelling for Sustainable Subsoil Management in Agroecological Systems
The successful candidate will:
develop and refine the integrated modeling framework to create sustainable business plans and innovative business models for dynamic living labs in diverse contexts, including agriculture, forestry and urban areas
implement and customize the existing bio-economic farm model MODAM tailored to the specific conditions and objectives of each living lab
establish a bidirectional linkage between MODAM and IFPRI's CGE model for a comprehensive assessment of subsoil health's economic implications and the effects of demand-side fluctuations on input costs and product output prices
facilitate interactive processes within a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) framework to optimize strategies for subsoil health enhancement
utilize SWOT method to develop long term, quantitative strategic plans emphasizing sustainable subsoil health improvement


This PhD position is carried out in collaboration with the Doctoral program in Agricultural and Forestry Research at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), Spain, under the research line of "Integrated Economic Modelling for Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry Development”.



The candidate should have the following profile:
a completed master's degree in agricultural economics, environmental economics, applied mathematics, or a related field
good background in bio-economic modelling, computational modelling, and optimization techniques
experience with dynamic modelling frameworks and familiarity with CGE models is highly desirable
good background in mathematical programming in GAMS for model development
excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams
strong interest in scientific writing
as an internationally research institution, located in Germany we require good to very good written and spoken English skills and the willingness to take part in further training as part of the language courses in German offered internally

One fully funded PhD position is available in the fields of distributed machine learning, secure and sustainable edge computing, energy-efficient computing, and next-generation wireless networks. The successful candidate will be expected to join the PhD program in Computational Science at Middle Tennessee State University starting in Spring 2025.

Key Criteria for Selection:

PhD Position in Ecology & Evolution of Oak Gall Wasp-Parasite Interactions at Binghamton University

The Prior Ecology Lab in the Biological Sciences Department at Binghamton University (BU) (priorecologylab.com) seeks a Ph.D. student to join the lab in the Fall (or Spring) of 2025 to work on a project examining how evolutionary history and ecological dimensions influence oak gall wasp-parasite interactions. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation, and the student will be responsible for contributing to the larger collaborative aims of the project to create cophylogenies and document trait space of oak gall wasps and parasite associates throughout North America. The PhD student in the Prior lab will contribute to concentrated collections in the northeast and northwest of North America, along with measuring gall traits and assessing how dimensions of gall trait space influence parasite diversity. There will also be flexibility to form their ideas within the project's scope. This project collaborates with the Forbes (forbes.lab.uiowa.edu) and Hood (https://lnkd.in/df6akM6S) labs and the founders of gallformers.org.

Requirements: We seek a candidate with an undergraduate degree (or MS) in ecology, evolution, entomology, or a related field and experience with DNA-based laboratory research. We prefer candidates with fieldwork experience, some experience in R or a similar statistical program, strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as a research team member.

Funding: The student will be funded during semesters by a Teaching Assistantship at BU, with two semesters of Graduate Assistantship funding to aid in field collections. Summer funding will also be provided.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Machine Learning
The University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Bosch Group has opened a new collaborative research lab, Delta Lab 2. We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in machine learning to be a part of this collaboration. Research topics include include generative models (ex: flows, conditional generation, applications to AI4Science) and/or uncertainty quantification (ex: conformal prediction, approximate inference). Delta Lab 2 is embedded within the Amsterdam Machine Learning Lab (AMLab) and the Computer Vision Lab (CV), two research groups within the UvA Informatics Institute.

What are you going to do?

Tasks and responsibilities:
Invent and evaluate novel methodologies for machine learning;
Show that these methods have practical consequence;
Present your research by contributing to international conferences, workshops, and journals;
Assist in teaching activities: teaching courses; supervising master and PhD students;
Actively participate in Delta Lab 2 activities, including visits to the Bosch headquarters in Renningen, Germany;
Help with day-to-day operations of Delta Lab 2: updating lab website, reporting on lab progress and deliverables.

What do you have to offer?

Your experience and profile:
PhD in Machine Learning, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field;
Experience in programming and software development. Familiarity with Python and statistical computing libraries (e.g. NumPy, PyTorch, JAX) is preferred;
Enthusiasm for the scientific process: formulating and conducting experiments, data collection and analysis, disseminating findings via writing and oral presentations;
Ability to cooperate and work effectively within a team;
Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
