MS. Position in Hydrology/Bbiogeochemistry at Auburn University (Spring 2025)

The Singh Environmental Systems Lab (https://lnkd.in/gwSwr-BD) at Auburn University seeks two motivated MS students interested in understanding hydrological and/or biogeochemical processes at regional scales. The student will have the opportunity to work with large datasets, hydrological and water quality models, and statistical approaches.

The graduate student will interact with an interdisciplinary team of scientists, including a limnologist, soil biogeochemist, and hydrologist.

Preferred qualifications:
BS in hydrology, biogeochemistry, environmental science, or related fields; Background in R, Python, or other programming languages is preferred.

MS. Position in Winter Limnology at the University of Vermont

We are seeking an MS student to work on an NSF Macrosystems-funded project investigating the influence of warming winters on phytoplankton phenology and ecosystem function. This is part of a larger collaborative project with GLEON partners from University of Missouri, Cornell, SUNY New Paltz, and University of Colorado-Boulder. The project will integrate experimental approaches in aquatic mesocosms at the Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory with a larger scale study of more than 30 lakes across the U.S.

Ideal candidates will be enthusiastic about collaborative team science and the influences of climate change on aquatic ecosystem function. Ph.D. Position on Symbiont-Mediated Detoxification in the Caterpillar Microbiome

An NSF-funded PhD position is available in Dr. Alison Ravenscraft's laboratory (www.ravenscraftlab.com) at the University of Texas at Arlington. Ravenscraft Lab focuses on ecological interactions between insects and their microbial symbionts. The successful applicant will investigate the role of the caterpillar gut microbiota in the plant-insect chemical arms race. Start date is August 2025 (the Fall 2025 semester).

The idea that gut flora may assist insects in breaking down plant defenses has been often proposed, but rarely tested. The graduate student will join a team of collaborative researchers who are working together to ask whether, and how much, the insect gut flora help to detoxify an herbivorous diet. The research will involve a combination of field work, insect rearing experiments in the lab, microbial cultivation, and high-throughput metagenomics. The student will acquire highly desirable skills including microbial culture techniques, use of analytical chemistry equipment (HPLC, LCMS), and the generation and analysis of high-throughput sequencing datasets. The position is funded by a prestigious NSF grant, and the student will also benefit from four years of preliminary data and sample collection, including a library of hundreds of insect gut bacterial isolates.
