Hi everyone,

We are pleased to announce a postdoctoral fellowship position focused on advancing Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) through the study of particle transport and fluid mechanics processes. This fellowship includes a unique professional development curriculum and offers an evenly balanced experience between academia and industry. The successful candidate will be co-advised by Prof. Adam Jiankang Yang at Dalhousie University and SinkCo Labs, an industry leader in mCDR technology.

Research Focus:

The ocean’s biological pump removes CO₂ from the atmosphere via phytoplankton, but only 1% of that carbon reaches deep-sea sediments, leaving significant potential for further carbon storage in the ocean, which covers 70% of the Earth's surface. Our carbon sequestration technology accelerates this natural process by storing remnant biomass in marine sediments. The research will focus on the transport of particles and associated fluid mechanics during biomass injection into sediment mud, a novel approach to mCDR.

Salary and Support:

Minimum salary of $70,000 CAD per year (up to two years, subject to approval).
Up to $5,000 CAD for research expenses.
$3,000 CAD for professional development opportunities.
How to Apply:

Interested candidates should send their CV, contact information for two referees, and a brief statement of research interests to Dr. Adam Jiankang Yang (jiankang.yang@dal.ca) or Dr. Brenna Boehman (brenna@sinkcolabs.com).

Location:

The research will be based at the Department of Civil and Resource Engineering at Dalhousie University, with field pilot operations in the Gulf of Mexico conducted by SinkCo Labs. Potential collaboration opportunities exist with Prof. Christine Baker at Stanford University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The successful candidate will lead the reservoir simulation modeling for large-scale river basins across the continental U.S., and will also collaborate on the hydrologic modeling led by the Cornell team.

This is a two-year position beginning Winter or Summer 2025. Remote work options available for candidates located in the United States.

Required:
Ph.D. in Civil & Environmental Engineering or a related field
Strong programming experience
Strong communication skills in oral and written English
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
Preferred:
Background in statistics and operations research
Proficiency with Python, high-performance computing, and machine learning
Contact Jon Herman (jdherman@ucdavis.edu) or Stefano Galelli (galelli@cornell.edu) for more information. Candidates should send a full CV, 1-2 relevant publications, and contact information for three references.
