Asked about foreign students, Pres Trump says ‘It's not that I want them’ but the U.S. is basically a big business, making it difficult to abruptly cut off all international arrivals. Same is true of foreign workers, investors.
The U.S. economy has relied on bad habits for 90yrs, so while sad it is not a surprise. But, the admin has cut foreign students with stricter requirements and rules; there is a pending rule to restrict foreign student duration and a memo was sent requesting schools to cut their foreign student totals from 20, 30, 40% down to a new 15% cap.
This signals willingness and intent to wind it down, though slower than we'd like. The response from us, then, should be to urge more rule changes; out-voice Ag, Tech & Edu and make it clear we accept the risks.

Similar to Iran, during which Trump said he might ‘change’ Iran, then won with no war, or his suggestion to forgive some migrant workers, after which ICE worksite raids only increased, there seems to be a discrepancy between Pres. Trump on-screen and what Trump's administration does in practice.

Sir. Francis Galton circa 1901 proposes to provide affordable, burden-free houses for healthy young couples. A variant of this idea was proposed in Germany years later, and made light in some parts of America.

Hawaii, one of the bluest states in the U.S. thanks to Asian immigration, has seen 3x the ICE arrests this year despite resistance. This indicates even in the difficult areas we are picking up immigration enforcement.
Advocates say the reported rate is lower than the real number of arrests: ‘We have several reports of clients detained by ICE, that's been confirmed, we never hear or see them again,” Hayley Cheng, Chinese, the state’s first deputy public defender.

On executive policy we are winning and we must continue to push it as far as possible. An area the admin should readdress is the use of Travel Ban; Trump has 19 countries banned, 40 are warned; Travel Ban should extend to visa-scammers: India and China.

Another official DHS rule proposal, this one looking to decrease or, if necessary, eliminate OPT, a program which allows foreign students to be H-1Bs. This is in addition to the pending H-1B wage floor filter and a planned visa time-limit.

Forbes report today observes what I said yesterday: the rules proposed and passed do not match what Trump says publicly.

‘20, 30 years we have offshored certain manufacturing jobs. The president's point is that we can't snap our fingers and learn how to build overnight. The vision is, we bring in skilled overseas workers, have them train Americans, then return home.’
Bessent explains that the U.S. has been lacking in industry for decades, which is true, and says the President does not like large immigration, but temporary migration to fill the gap. This is an agreeable position, the part where they go home, but they'd need to ban Indians & Chinese from this.

An Appeal To Pragmatism
the U.S. has been lacking in industry for decades
Bessent is entirely correct, the U.S. has virtually wiped out its self-manufacturing. To bring this back would take at least 6-7 years of training. Every visa category has to go down, and deportations have to go up, to make room for such a development.

Franz is correct, President Trump in the interview says immigrants cannot come in big numbers or replace Americans, he does accept a small entry and temp workers.
But he and the admin are not treating this subject carefully enough, or targetting it harshly enough yet, which causes everyone to have justified upset reactions. The total must come way, way down as Vance said.

This negative leeching is done in bad faith, a bitter attempt to poach the disappointed and confused rather than inform or uplift. Despite the questionable public rhetoric, which the admin really should be careful with, current and coming changes all lead toward continued immigration restriction.
This is not to mention our Cultural and Civil wins, e.g. in the Universities and Museums. Continuing this trend, including a hopeful end of birthright citizenship by SCOTUS, next wave of ICE hires, USCIS defenders is exactly what is necessary. HUD, IRS, HHS audits to remove migrants from housing and benefits is still ongoing on top of that.

Taking a look at President Trump's policies against total immigration: work application is down 80% while work approval is down 50%, asylum denial has soared to a record high while the refugee cap is cut by 93%. Illegal entry is 0; deportation highest ever. ‘Automatic work authorization’ is ended, public charge visa rejection has returned.
Anticipated changes listed: Remittance Tax January 1st; DNA and biometric database of all legal, illegal foreigners January 2nd; USCIS gaining an armed-division to arrest legal aliens, became rule Oct. 6, now WIP; ‘neighborhood checks’ restarted after a 30yr pause, local investigations of legals; OPT close or narrowing, H-1B floor raising; Green Card discrimination by nation-origin.
