The immigration of predominantly Catholic European populations had a similar effect; they were significantly more left-wing than their Protestant counterparts.

The Immigration Restriction League and other nativists of yore were completely vindicated. Without Jewish and Catholic immigration, it's likely that the Hart-Celler Act (or an equivalent) would never have passed.

Immigration and its consequences are not fully appreciated unless we acknowledge the extent to which even minor diversity can confuse a nation. 1865-1920 wrought 1965-2020. The 1840s immigration wave and 1940s refugee wave respectively assured those terrible 60s.

They brought with them their crime, culture, complications and clannish concerns. And with this came their votes, and with those votes came changes no American wished for—the expanded electorate but diluted citizenship standard meant disunity for the United States.
