Congress Approves Bill To Prevent Any President From Leaving NATO

Packed into the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act that’s been approved by both the House and Senate is an amendment designed to prevent any future president from withdrawing the US from NATO.

The legislation was a bipartisan effort led by Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) and would prohibit the president from leaving NATO without Senate approval or an Act of Congress.

According to The Hill, Kaine said the legislation “reaffirms US support for this crucial alliance that is foundational for our national security. It also sends a strong message to authoritarians around the world that the free world remains united.”

Kaine, Rubio, and other hawks in Congress would not have to worry about President Biden trying to leave NATO, as he is a staunch supporter of the alliance and has repeatedly stated the US obligation to NATO is “sacred.”

Worldcoin, the eye-ball scanning protocol co-founded by Sam Altman, is cracking open a wider integration network by adding support for platforms such as Minecraft, Reddit, Telegram, Shopify, and Mercado Libre to its World ID offering. This comes on the back of the cohesive upgrades it has already sealed with Discord, Talent Protocol, and Okta’s Auth0.

Digital ID systems, like the one used by WorldCoin, raise significant privacy concerns due to the sensitive nature of the biometric data they collect and store. The other issue is that identity becomes immutable.

Consider a scenario where your digital identity becomes inaccessible, perhaps due to regulatory action or technical issues. In conventional financial systems, including traditional cash and most cryptocurrencies, you can simply create a new wallet and start over. However, with systems tied to unique biometric identifiers, such as iris scans, you can’t easily replace your identity. Unlike a plot from a science fiction movie, obtaining a new iris scan is not a feasible option.

Israeli Defense Minister Tells Jake Sullivan Gaza Onslaught Will Last ‘More Than Several Months’

The Biden administration says it wants Israel to transition into a more targeted campaign but is not 'dictating terms' or leveraging military aid

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Thursday told US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in televised remarks that Israel’s brutal assault on Gaza will continue for “more than several months.”

Sullivan traveled to Israel to discuss the “timetable” of the war, and there are signs that the Biden administration wants Israel to wrap things up more quickly, but the Israelis have shown no interest in taking the US advice.

“Hamas is a terrorist organization that built itself over a decade to fight Israel, and they built infrastructure under the ground and above the ground, and it is not easy to destroy them,” Gallant told Sullivan before a closed-door meeting.

“It will take and require a long period of time — it will last more than several months, but we will win and we will destroy them. So thank you once again for coming to Israel, for helping us, and for supporting us,” Gallant added.

AP: Palestinian Poll Shows A Rise In Hamas Support And Close To 90% Wanting US-Backed Abbas To Resign

A wartime opinion poll among Palestinians published Wednesday shows a rise in support for Hamas, which appears to have ticked up even in the devastated Gaza Strip, and an overwhelming rejection of Western-backed President Mahmoud Abbas, with nearly 90% saying he must resign.

The findings by a Palestinian pollster signal more difficulties ahead for the Biden administration’s postwar vision for Gaza and raise questions about Israel’s stated goal of ending Hamas’ military and governing capabilities.

Washington has called for the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, currently led by Abbas, to eventually assume control of Gaza and run both territories as a precursor to statehood. U.S. officials have said the PA must be revitalized, without letting on whether this would mean leadership changes.

The PA administers pockets of the Israeli-occupied West Bank and has governed Gaza until a takeover by Hamas militants in 2007. The Palestinians have not held elections since 2006 when Hamas won a parliamentary majority.

TikTok Permanently Banned Glenn Greenwald’s System Update Show Last Week and Refuses To Say Why

The TikTok account of a popular show hosted by journalist Glenn Greenwald was permanently banned, sparking debate over censorship practices on social media platforms. The account, primarily used for posting show clips, was banned for allegedly violating TikTok’s community guidelines, specifically the integrity and authenticity policy.

“Your account was permanently banned due to multiple violations of our community guidelines,” the notice from TikTok said, giving little detail about why.

“We could not get any kind of an answer on why it is that our account is banned, but we know that it’s permanently banned,” Greenwald said.

'Psychological Warfare': Israeli Troops Go On Looting And Vandalism Spree Across Gaza

Footage shows soldiers in besieged enclave stealing makeup and necklaces, setting fire to food supplies and installing Jewish symbols in Palestinian neighbourhoods

Since Israel launched a ground operation in Gaza in late October, footage has emerged of troops carrying out violent and provocative acts that appear to have little to do with furthering their stated aim of destroying Hamas.

This has included theft, destruction of businesses and properties, vandalism, and the installation of Israeli and Jewish symbols across Gaza’s neighbourhoods.

Such behaviour has been blamed on indiscipline, but analysts believe it is also a form of “psychological warfare”.

In one example of theft, a soldier bragged about stealing a silver necklace from Gaza to take back to his girlfriend in Israel. Another troop stole a rug from a Palestinian home.

In a post shared on a popular Facebook group, an Israeli officer gloated about seizing a host of sealed makeup items to take to Israel as “gifts from Gaza”.

U.S. Says Its Destroyer Shot Down 14 Drones In Red Sea Launched From Yemen, US Weighs Strike Options To Deter Houthis From More Red Sea Attacks

An American destroyer on Saturday shot down more than a dozen drones in the Red Sea launched from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, the U.S. Central Command said.

"The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS CARNEY... operating in the Red Sea, successfully engaged 14 unmanned aerial systems launched as a drone wave from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen," CENTCOM said social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

The aerial vehicles were "assessed to be one-way attack drones and were shot down with no damage to ships in the area or reported injuries," according to the statement.

Top Biden administration officials are actively weighing options to strike back at Houthis in Yemen after the Iran-backed group launched new attacks on naval and commercial ships in the Red Sea on Saturday, according to two U.S. officials.

The Pentagon has in recent days moved the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group from the Persian Gulf into the Gulf of Aden, off the coast of Yemen, to support a potential U.S. response to attacks, said one of the officials, both of whom were granted anonymity to speak about sensitive plans. The military has also provided options to commanders to strike the Houthis, the official said.

Israel Steps Up Gaza Bombardment After Talks On Hostages

Israel stepped up its bombardment of Gaza overnight and into Sunday, killing at least 40 people, Palestinians said, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu argued that the only way to secure the release of hostages was intense military pressure on Hamas.

The Israeli attacks took place amid fierce fighting the length of the coastal enclave, according to residents and militants, with communications down for a fourth day, making it hard to reach the wounded.

"The communication blackout in #Gaza is the longest since the start of the Israeli escalation," the Palestinian Red Crescent said on X, adding that its teams were also hampered by shelling.

Israel's spy chief held talks on Friday with the prime minister of Qatar, which mediated earlier hostage releases in return for a week-long ceasefire and the freeing of Palestinian prisoners, a source with knowledge of the matter said.

US Summons Australia to the Middle East, as Congress Approves AUKUS Bill

US Congress passed the National Defence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024, which authorises the transfer of three US Virginia class nuclear-powered submarines to Australia that, in turn, will serve to strengthen US posture in the Indo Pacific region.

The bill also facilitates Australia in the provision of maintenance to US submarines docked here, which, along with nuclear-propelled subs from the UK, will form “a rotational presence from as early as 2027 under Submarine Rotational Force West (SRF-West)”.

With the passing of this bill, it’s hard to see how our nation won’t unquestionably throw itself into a US-led war on China. In fact, the legislation also provides for the US to train Taiwan’s military forces, with Beijing’s claims over that self-governing island being the chief reason to enter into a conflict.

And in a sign that Washington too considers Australia to be the lucky country, the new law has established “a mechanism for the US to accept funds from Australia to lift the capacity of the submarine industrial base” to the tune of $3 billion, which will evidently hurry up the process.

The passing of the bill might also heighten the pressure that Washington began placing on Canberra the day prior to its passage, as the US then called upon Australia to send a warship over to the Middle Eastern Red Sea in response to Yemen’s Houthi rebels attacking trading vessels.

And the fact that Uncle Sam is now calling on its Indo Pacific deputy to join its ranks in a military sideshow developing in relation to Israel’s wholesale massacre upon the Palestinians of Gaza, straight after the Albanese government voted in favour of a ceasefire in the UN, is lost upon no one.
