ICC Arrest Warrant Applications Ready For Ben Gvir & Smotrich On Apartheid Charges

Arrest warrant applications against two senior Israeli ministers on apartheid charges are complete and currently with two deputy prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

If issued, the warrants for National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich would mark the first time the crime of apartheid is prosecuted at an international court.

According to multiple ICC insiders, Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan had already prepared the cases against Ben Gvir and Smotrich before going on leave in May.

"Those applications for the arrest warrants are completely done," an ICC source told MEE, adding, "The only thing that didn't happen was submitting them to the court," speaking on condition of anonymity.

❗️Microsoft investigates claims that Israel used Azure for mass surveillance of Palestinians

The Guardian reports that Microsoft has launched an “urgent” external inquiry after revelations that Israel’s Unit 8200 used its Azure cloud platform to store recordings of millions of intercepted Palestinian phone calls from Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

The joint investigation with +972 Magazine and Local Call found that Unit 8200 relied on a customized Azure system to hold vast troves of data. Microsoft said such use — “the storage of data files of phone calls obtained through broad or mass surveillance of civilians” — would breach its terms of service.

The inquiry, to be overseen by Covington & Burling, follows an earlier review this year that found “no evidence to date” that Azure was used to “target or harm people” in Gaza.

According to The Guardian, concerns have since grown inside Microsoft that some Israel-based employees may have concealed details about how Unit 8200 operated when questioned during the earlier review.

Leaked files show the company knew as early as 2021 that Unit 8200 planned to migrate large volumes of classified data into Azure, and senior executives, including CEO Satya Nadella, met with the unit’s commander to discuss the move.

Microsoft now faces internal pressure from the worker-led group No Azure for Apartheid, which accuses it of complicity in genocide and apartheid.

The new inquiry will also examine Microsoft’s commercial agreements with the Israeli military, with the company pledging to share its findings publicly once complete.

Syria Preparing 50,000 Troops To Retake Raqqa, Deir Ezzor From SDF: Report

The Kurdish-led SDF has refused Damascus' demand to incorporate into the new extremist-led Syrian army and state

The Syrian military is planning a major offensive to capture two Arab-majority governorates in northeast Syria now occupied by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), The National reported on 17 August.

Security sources speaking with the UAE-based paper said if the US-backed SDF does not hand over most of its territory, the Syrian government will assemble a force of 50,000 and launch an attack to capture the governorates of Raqqa and Deir Ezzor sometime before October.

The SDF began conquering territory in Raqqa and Deir Ezzor in 2015 with the backing of the US military. The US had previously supported ISIS in Syria and Iraq in an effort to divide both countries, then pivoted to partner with Kurdish forces to fight against ISIS.

At the US's urging, the SDF captured large swathes of northeast Syria, including most of Syria's major oil fields, ensuring Washington and Tel Aviv would maintain leverage against the government of Bashar al-Assad.

The US, Israel, and Turkiye successfully toppled Assad in December, installing Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leader Ahmad al-Sharaa, a former ISIS commander, in his place.

Moscow, Tehran Push To Complete Rasht-Astara Railway

Officials say the railway segment is the missing link needed to unlock the full potential of the International North–South Transport Corridor

Moscow and Tehran discussed accelerating the construction of the Rasht–Astara railway on 15 August at the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) summit in Kyrgyzstan.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk said that the discussions took place between Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref.

He called the exchange constructive and said it also touched on the EAEU–Iran free trade agreement as well as broader cooperation on transport and logistics.

The deal to build the Rasht–Astara line was originally inked in May 2023.

The 162-kilometer railway runs through northern Iran, linking the city of Rasht with the border town of Astara, then ties directly into the existing Astara–Baku line in Azerbaijan.
