Jill Biden: Trump Supporters Are "Insurrectionists, Dangerous Extremists"
During an interview with MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski Thursday (Jan 11), Jill Biden labelled all supporters of Donald Trump as “insurrectionists” and “dangerous extremists,” saying she can’t believe what they have done to the country.
Brzezinski asked Biden’s wife how she feels about being labelled part of ‘the Biden crime family,’ noting “I have one congresswoman: The Biden crime family sold out America, Marjorie Taylor Greene. He’s a liar. He’s mentally incompetent.”
“And let’s not even talk about what ‘Let’s go, Brandon’ means, but you have U.S. senators holding signs that say that,” Brzezinski added.
Dr Jill responded, “It’s hard to realise it’s our country, isn’t it? I mean, to look at it, what we used to have, and what the other side, the extremists have turned this country into.”
“I mean, we would never see things like that, say, 10 years ago,” she added.
She continued, “it is a little scary… not just for me and for Joe, but just to see what happened. I mean, look at the insurrection that took place. I mean, it’s just so hard to believe that the United States of America witnessed an insurrection. I think Americans were just stunned by that.”
Brzezinski then noted that Trump is calling those arrested for entering the Capitol (or just walking around it) ‘hostages’.
“Or patriots, you know, as he - he doesn’t call them what they were, insurrectionists, dangerous extremists,” Dr Jill responded.

Gallup: Record High 43% of Americans Now Identify as Independents
Political independents continue to constitute the largest political bloc in the U.S., with an average of 43% of U.S. adults identifying this way in 2023, tying the record high from 2014.
Independent identification has been 40% or higher each year since 2011, except for the 2016 (39%) and 2020 (39%) presidential election years.
Equal 27% shares of U.S. adults identify as Republicans and Democrats, with the Democratic figure marking a new low for that party in Gallup’s trend.
Independents first outnumbered supporters of both major political parties in 1991 and have continued to do so since then, except in several years between 2004 and 2008. Over time, the increase in the percentage of independents has come more at the expense of Democrats than Republicans, which might be expected since Democrats were previously the largest political group.

Israeli Army Ordered Mass Hannibal Directive on 7 Oct: Media
An investigation from Israel's leading newspaper indicates Israel deliberately killed many of its own civilians and soldiers during Hamas' Operation Al-Aqsa Flood to prevent them being taken captive back to Gaza
The Israeli military implemented the “Hannibal Directive” during Hamas’ attack on 7 October, killing some of its own civilians and soldiers to prevent Hamas from taking them as captives back to Gaza, according to an investigation by Israel’s leading newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth, which will be published in full on 12 January.
The Hebrew edition of the paper wrote on 11 January that “one of the revelations revealed in the investigation is that at noon on October 7, the IDF [Israeli army] ordered all of its combat units in practice to use the ‘Hannibal Procedure’ although without clearly mentioning this explicitly by name.”
The order was to stop “at all costs any attempt by Hamas terrorists to return to Gaza, that is, despite the fear that some of them have abductees,” the paper wrote.
The Times of Israel described how the Hannibal procedure, or directive, "allows soldiers to use potentially massive amounts of force to prevent a soldier from falling into the hands of the enemy. This includes the possibility of endangering the life of the soldier in question in order to prevent his capture.”
A previous Haaretz investigation of the directive concluded that “from the point of view of the army, a dead soldier is better than a captive soldier who himself suffers and forces the state to release thousands of captives in order to obtain his release.”

Australia’s eSafety Commissioner Complains About X Reinstating Censored Accounts
Without considering the possibility that there were perhaps too many of them to begin with – Australia’s eSafety Commissioner is complaining in a new report that X, since the Musk takeover, has fired too many “safety and public policy personnel.”
Another complaint from the commissioner’s “transparency report” is about previously censored accounts getting reinstated on the platform.
The sum of the new policy, according to this Australian office – a government agency that’s “independent (but) supported by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA)” – is that X is now less capable of “tackling online hate.”
It is no wonder that these accusations are made by eSafety, considering that it has been given powers to deal with what’s described as “cyberbullying, image-based abuse, and illegal and harmful online content.”
Basing the report on information obtained from X, eSafety writes that 80 percent of “safety engineers” have been let go since October 2022 (the same figure applies to global public policy staff). Moderators working for X have fared somewhat better – still, over 50 percent of them have been fired.
Considering that these employees were doing more than simply moderating – there have been many confirmed and very controversial cases on clear censorship against content and accounts – free speech supporters are likely fine to learn these precise numbers for the first time.
However, the Australian eSafety is not, taking a negative stance toward the developments and warning that they have “implications for Australian users.”

UN Says 2,000 Peacekeepers To Leave Eastern Congo In Withdrawal's First Phase
About 2,000 U.N. troops will leave restive eastern areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo by the end of April in the first phase of the peacekeeping mission's planned withdrawal from the country, the head of mission said on Saturday.
The U.N. Security Council approved the end of the mission in December following a request by Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi in September to fast-track the withdrawal of the peacekeepers.
The currently 13,500-strong force, known as MONUSCO, took over from an earlier U.N. operation in 2010 to help quell insecurity in the east of the Central African country, where armed groups fight over territory and resources.
But in recent years, its presence has become increasingly unpopular for what critics say is a failure to protect civilians against militia groups, sparking deadly protests.
"We have a ceiling of 13,500 troops authorised by the Security Council, as of April 30th, with the start of the withdrawal underway, we will reach 11,500," Bintou Keita, head of the mission, told a joint press conference with government officials.

Sheriff’s Office Responds After Online Video Shows Several Deputies Detaining Man For ‘Suspicious Activity’
Wilmington, NC - In the videos ... the person filming tells deputies he was riding his bike home when he stopped at a car wash in the North Chase to look for an air pump.
Deputies repeatedly asked the man for identification and his full name, but he refused. When he asked why he was being detained multiple times, deputies ignored his question for several minutes before a deputy said he was being detained for “suspicious activity.”
“Suspicious is not a crime,” the man tells the deputy. “What crime am I being detained for?”
“That’s what we’re trying to figure out,” the deputy responds.
“That’s not how it works, bro,” the man says.
The video of the incident lasted more than 14 minutes.
In a Facebook post on Friday, the sheriff’s office says it is aware of the video from the incident on Dec. 11, 2023.

The bodies of two men who died while incarcerated in Alabama's prison system were missing their hearts or other organs when returned to their families, a federal lawsuit alleges.
The family of Brandon Clay Dotson, who died in a state prison in November, filed a federal lawsuit last month against the Alabama Department of Corrections and others saying his body was decomposing and his heart was missing when his remains were returned to his family.
In a court filing in the case last week, the daughter of Charles Edward Singleton, another deceased inmate, said her father's body was missing all of his internal organs when it was returned in 2021.
Lauren Faraino, an attorney representing Dotson's family, said via email Wednesday that the experience of multiple families shows this is "absolutely part of a pattern."

Hamas did not plan to attack the festival
...An Israeli police investigation reported by Haaretz indicates that Hamas was unaware of the festival in advance. The official findings suggest that the intended target was Re’im, a settlement and military base located just down the road - on Route 232 - from the Nova site.... The police investigation also indicates that Hamas fighters reached the festival site from Route 232, rather than from the Gaza border fence, further supporting the claim that the festival was not a planned target...

However, as people exited the festival site by car and moved onto Route 232, Israeli police established roadblocks in both directions, leading to a traffic jam that trapped many partygoers in the area where fighting between Hamas and the Border Police would eventually break out.
“There was a lot of confusion. The police barricaded the road, so we couldn’t go near Be’eri. We couldn’t go near Re’im, the two near kibbutzim,” says one witness, Yarin Levin, who was trying to evacuate the area with his friends.
....Another witness, Shye Weinstein, also confirms the Israeli police roadblocks that blocked the main exit from the festival. He took photos of a Border Police vehicle and a heavily armed policeman in combat gear impeding the road in front of his car.
A cell phone video from a concert attendee shows Israeli police and security forces using their vehicles to block the road near the festival site and exchanging fire with Hamas fighters.
When gunfire erupted, those trapped on the road fled east into open fields, whether in their cars or by foot. Many made it past the fields and hid near trees, under bushes, and in ravines.
But body cam footage shows heavily armed Israeli police units taking up positions on the road and firing across the open field into the trees where civilians had taken cover.🚩🧐
As Nova attendee Gilad Karplus, also a former Israeli soldier, told the BBC:
"We pretty much knew they would probably block the road. I'm pretty sure a lot of people got killed on those roads...We drove into the field and tried to hide from them… afterwards we got a bit deeper into the fields and then they started firing sniper rifles on us from different places and also heavy artillery."
