Shehhi had previously been the Emirati envoy to Iraq since 2015. Before that, he was the UAE ambassador to Sudan.
Damascus and Abu Dhabi restored diplomatic relations in 2018 following seven years of severed ties.
Syria-UAE relations deteriorated after the wealthy Gulf nation’s support for the US-led regime change war on Syria, which started in 2011.

Half Of US Tenants Can’t Afford To Pay Their Rent. Here’s What’s Ahead
Half of renters in the United States have found themselves paying more than they can afford, following years of surging rents. But an increase in the construction of multiple-unit buildings has boosted the supply of apartments, which is slowly beginning to rein in runaway rents.
Nationally, rents declined annually in December for the eighth straight month, according to Realtor.com’s monthly report. The median asking rent was $1,713, which was down $4 from November and down $63 from the July 2022 peak.
However, median rent is still $309 higher than the same time in 2019, before the pandemic. That’s a 22% increase.
And people have been feeling it. In some places, rents aren’t dropping at all. Rent is just increasing at a slower pace.

Imran Khan Barred From Public Office After Back-to-back Convictions
The 'hurried' verdict was delivered in absentia as officials from Khan's party condemned the rampant use of lawfare against Pakistan's most popular political figure
The accountability court in Rawalpindi on 31 January sentenced former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in absentia to 14 years in jail in a case related to the alleged selling of state gifts.
This is Khan's second conviction over the past two days and the third since he was ousted from office in a US-backed legislative coup in 2022.
According to Wednesday's verdict, Khan and his wife are barred from holding any public post for 10 years and must pay a fine of 757 million rupees ($2.7m) each.
Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party blasted the court's decision, calling it a “kangaroo trial” and that the conviction represented the “complete destruction of every existing law in Pakistan.”

American Troops Put on Standby for Potential U.S. Ground Involvement in Gaza
US Air Force personnel in Iraq received a memo in January ordering them to be on standby to support potential US ground involvement in Gaza, The Intercept reported on Tuesday (Jan 30).
The memo contained orders for the airmen to be placed “on standby to forward deploy to support troops in the case of on ground US involvement in the Israel Hamas war.” A separate personnel document also obtained by The Intercept showed the order was meant for personnel deployed to Iraq last year.
The revelation of the memo comes as the situation in the Middle East continues to escalate. President Biden could potentially target the Iranian military in the wake of a drone attack in Jordan that killed three US troops even though the Pentagon admitted it has no evidence Tehran was directly involved.
The US has also continued to bomb the Houthis in Yemen, and Israel is threatening total war with Lebanon. The memo suggests that the US might be planning to get involved in ground operations in Gaza if the region does explode into a full-blown war that involves the US and Iran.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to fire Ukraine’s top general, Valery Zaluzhny, a move that could backfire due to Zaluzhny’s popularity inside Ukraine.
Ukrainian media outlets reported that Zelensky told Zaluzhny that he would be moved to another post but that the general refused to step down as commander-in-chief. Other reports said Zelensky told Zaluzhny he would be fired, but for now, he remains in his position.
Zelensky’s office has denied there was a conversation about Zaluzhny’s firing, but Ukrainian sources speaking to the media say it’s just a matter of time before the general is sacked. Sources told POLITICO that the reason why he’s been spared so far is because Zelensky is afraid of creating a powerful new political rival.
Zaluzhny has long been rumored to be a potential future presidential candidate once Zelensky allows elections to happen again.

'Largest Ever' NATO Exercise to Rehearse Russian Attack on Europe
A massive NATO military exercises slated to run all the way through the end of May has kicked off. Exercise Steadfast Defender 24 is being hailed as the largest NATO exercises since the Cold War. Some 90,000 troops from all 31 members states will take part.
Also, Sweden—which is on the cusp of formally entering the alliance after Turkish parliament belatedly signed off—is expected to sent troops and equipment. "The Alliance will demonstrate its ability to reinforce the Euro-Atlantic area via trans-Atlantic movement of forces from North America," a NATO statement said.
The focus of the exercises is to improve readiness for deploying NATO assets on a rapid and large scale from North America and other parts in order to defend Europe from an invasion.
Russian media has denounced the planned drills as essentially a rehearsal of war against the Russian state.

Israel Fails to Produce Evidence to Justify Widespread Cemetery Destruction in Gaza
The Israeli military granted CNN a three-hour tour inside the Gaza Strip to view the destruction of Palestinian cemeteries. The outlet explained that the evidence presented by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) did not confirm Tel Aviv’s claims about tunnels under the graveyard. Across Gaza, Israel has damaged over a dozen cemeteries.
An IDF general gave CNN’s Jeremy Diamond a guided tour of the Bani Suheila cemetery. Israel claimed it needed to dig up the bodies buried at the graveyard because a Hamas tunnel ran under it. However, the IDF was not able to show CNN evidence supporting that claim.
Diamond explained the evidence presented by the IDF actually suggested that there was no tunnel beneath the cemetery. The IDF invited Diamond into Gaza after he reported that the Israeli military operations in Gaza had damaged 16 Gazan cemeteries. Palestinian officials report that 2,000 graves in the Strip have been damaged or destroyed by the Israeli military.
Janina Dill, co-director at Oxford University’s Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict, told CNN that the desecration of burial sites could be evidence of genocide. The Israeli military granted CNN a three-hour tour inside the Gaza Strip to view the destruction of Palestinian cemeteries. The outlet explained that the evidence presented by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) did not confirm Tel Aviv’s claims about tunnels under the graveyard. Across Gaza, Israel has damaged over a dozen cemeteries.
An IDF general gave CNN’s Jeremy Diamond a guided tour of the Bani Suheila cemetery. Israel claimed it needed to dig up the bodies buried at the graveyard because a Hamas tunnel ran under it. However, the IDF was not able to show CNN evidence supporting that claim.
Diamond explained the evidence presented by the IDF actually suggested that there was no tunnel beneath the cemetery. The IDF invited Diamond into Gaza after he reported that the Israeli military operations in Gaza had damaged 16 Gazan cemeteries. Palestinian officials report that 2,000 graves in the Strip have been damaged or destroyed by the Israeli military.
Janina Dill, co-director at Oxford University’s Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict, told CNN that the desecration of burial sites could be evidence of genocide. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled last week it was plausible that Israel was committing a genocide against Palestinians.

NATO Chief Visits US to Push for Ukraine Aid
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg is in the US this week to push for Congress to pass a massive $61 billion aid package for Ukraine proposed by the White House. The supplemental defense spending bill has been stalled in Congress for several months. In an effort to appeal to Republicans, the civilian NATO head attempted to tie the war in Ukraine to Taiwan’s security.
During a press conference in the US with Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday, Stoltenberg said, “.... “Today it’s Ukraine; tomorrow it could be Taiwan.”
... Republicans in Congress and the White House have been negotiating the $111 billion supplemental defense bill for several months. The Biden administration attempted to sway Republicans to pass aid for Ukraine by tying it to funding for military assistance to Israel and Taiwan, as well as securing the southern border.
The plan backfired as Republicans leveraged aid to Ukraine to get Biden to make concessions regarding immigration policy. A resolution appears unlikely in the near term as former President Donald Trump denounced the bipartisan proposal that emerged earlier this month.
The war is not going well for Ukraine. Russian forces are gaining territory. Ukraine is short on manpower and weapons. Even if Congress passes an additional round of military aid for Ukraine, Western stockpiles are largely depleted of air defense intercepts and artillery shells.

Report: US Plans Weeks-Long Bombing Campaign Against Iranian Targets
The White House says the US response to the Jordan drone attack won't be a 'one-off'
US officials told NBC News that the US is planning to launch a weeks-long bombing campaign in the Middle East in retaliation for the drone attack in northeast Jordan that killed three American soldiers.
The officials said that the targets are expected to include Iranian targets outside of Iran, and the campaign will involve strikes and cyber operations. Other reports have said the US is considering targeting Iranians in Iraq and Syria or the Iranian navy.
While the potential targets are not inside Iran, direct attacks on the Iranian military could provoke a full-blown war between the US and Iran. The US is considering taking this course of action even though the Pentagon admitted it has no evidence Iran was directly involved in the drone attack in Jordan.

Netanyahu Approves Post-War Gaza plan: Report
The plan, which includes several stages, will allow Israel to assume military control over post-war Gaza and carry out operations across the strip
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has discreetly approved a plan for Israel to assume military control over Gaza in a “transition period” that is supposed to lead to the reformation of the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the eventual realization of a form of Palestinian statehood.
According to a 31 January report by the Jerusalem Post, this several-stage initiative was drawn up by a group of “businessmen” with close ties to the prime minister.
“Stage one involves the creation of a comprehensive Israeli military government in Gaza to oversee humanitarian aid and assume responsibility for the civilian population during a ‘transition period,’” the Israeli outlet writes.
“Stage two will see the formation of an international Arab coalition, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, the UAE, Bahrain, and others. This coalition is to be part of a broader regional normalization agreement, backing the establishment of ‘the new Palestinian Authority,’” it adds.
According to the report, this plan will allow officials – neither Hamas-affiliated nor linked to the current PA and its president – to “inherit” Gaza’s administration from Tel Aviv. It adds that the plan will allow Israel to carry out security operations in Gaza

Military juntas in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso said they were withdrawing from the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, because of sanctions the group imposed in response to the coups that were carried out.
In recent years, a string of coups have erupted across the Sahel, the arid strip south of the Sahara, forming an unbroken strip of military-run countries stretching coast to coast across the continent.
While attempts by the regional bloc to reverse some of these coups have failed, the sanctions it imposed — closing borders and cutting the three landlocked countries off from major trading partners — have endured, causing intense hardship for millions of people.
On Sunday, the three juntas said these sanctions were “inhumane.”
ECOWAS closed land and air borders, imposed a no-fly zone for commercial flights, suspended financial transactions and froze assets the countries held in ECOWAS central banks.

Recent claims made by a senior Israeli army officer and police spokesperson regarding alleged atrocities committed by Hamas during Operation Al-Aqsa Flood are false, Haaretz newspaper reported on 21 January.
On 20 January, Lt. Col. Guy Basson, deputy commander of the Israeli army's Kfir Brigade, claimed in an interview with Channel 14 that fighters from Hamas’ military wing, the Qassam Brigades, murdered eight infants and a survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp on 7 October.
Speaking to Channel 14, Basson claimed: "We get to Kibbutz Be'eri, and I'm confronted with two main scenarios. One was from the children's nursery… where [the eight infants] were simply slaughtered and murdered." When the interviewer asked him in response," Did you see the children inside…?" Basson responded: "A house. Eight babies, eight dead babies."
Basson later added: "Another image that stuck with me is Genia, of blessed memory, an elderly woman from Kibbutz Be'eri. I see the number engraved on her arm, and you say to yourself, she went through the Holocaust in Auschwitz and ended up dying on Kibbutz Be'eri."
However, Haaretz reported that the incidents described in the interview never took place.

Judge Kathaleen McCormick rescinded Elon Musk's $55 billion Tesla compensation package, overturning the company's board and 80% of its shareholders.
McCormick also ruled against @elonmusk during his Twitter acquisition.
Before becoming the head of the Delaware Chancery Court, McCormick worked at a Delaware law firm called Young Conaway.
This firm and its employees have been major donors to President Joe Biden for decades.
In 2016, Hunter Biden hosted a gubernatorial campaign event for Congressman John Carney, with then-Vice President Joe Biden as the guest speaker.
This event took place at the Law Offices of Young Conaway in Wilmington, Delaware.
Carney, a close friend of Joe Biden for the last four decades, later became governor and nominated Kathaleen McCormick, a partner at Young Conaway, to her position on the Delaware Chancery Court.
In a March 2018 email, Hunter Biden claimed to personally know every judge on the Delaware Chancery Court while threatening legal action against his Chinese business partners.

After Elon Musk purchased Twitter with the stated goal of restoring free-speech, President Biden called for a federal investigation into Musk on the podium at the White House.
Following this, the Biden Department of Justice, Securities and Exchange Commission, and Federal Trade Commission initiated legal actions and investigations against Tesla, SpaceX, and X.
