UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Urges UK Government to Halt Imminent Extradition of Julian Assange

The UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Alice Jill Edwards, on Tuesday (Feb 6) urged the Government of the United Kingdom (UK) to halt the possible extradition of Julian Assange to the United States of America.

She called on British authorities to consider Julian Assange’s appeal based on substantial fears that, if extradited, he would be at risk of treatment amounting to torture or other forms of ill-treatment or punishment.

“Julian Assange suffers from a long standing and recurrent depressive disorder. He is assessed as being at risk of committing suicide. In the United States, he faces numerous charges, including under the Espionage Act of 1917 for alleged unlawful releases of diplomatic and other cables and documents via WikiLeaks. If extradited, he could be detained in prolonged isolation while awaiting trial, or as an inmate. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 175 years in prison,” Edwards said.

“The risk of being placed in prolonged solitary confinement, despite his precarious mental health status, and to receive a potentially disproportionate sentence raises questions as to whether Mr. Assange’s extradition to the United States would be compatible with the United Kingdom’s international human rights obligations, particularly under article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as well as respective articles 3 of the UN Convention against Torture and the European Convention on Human Rights,” the Special Rapporteur said.

U.S. Blocks Yemen-Saudi Peace Deal

The US is purposely blocking a Yemen peace deal that was negotiated between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, The New York Times reported on Tuesday (Feb 6).

The US decision to re-designate the Houthis as “Specially Designated Global Terrorists” will block the payment of public sector workers living in Houthi-controlled Yemen, who have gone without pay for years.

The payment of civil workers has been a key demand of the Houthis and is part of the first phase of the peace deal. The first phase would also fully open Yemen’s airports and sea ports that have been under blockade since 2015, another aspect of the deal that will be complicated by the new US sanctions, which will go into effect later this month.

A US official told the Times that the US would only allow the payment of Yemeni civil salaries if the Houthis choose the path of “peace” and stop attacking shipping in the Red Sea. But the Houthis, who govern the most populated area of Yemen, have been clear the operations will only stop once the Israeli slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza ends.

Instead of pressuring Israel to stop its onslaught, President Biden launched a new war against the Houthis, which has dramatically escalated the situation. The Houthis are now targeting American and British commercial shipping, and there’s no sign they will back down.

Aaron Mate on CIA Officer Admitting Intelligence Officials Colluded With Biden Admin to Denounce Hunter Biden Laptop as Fake - Excerpt From The Human Trafficking Circus in The Room, Epstein Is Just the Elephant - Pizzagate Needs to be Revisited [🧵on X]

In the wake of headlines like: “Ex-CIA Chief Spills On How He Got Spies To Write False Hunter Biden Laptop Letter To ‘Help Biden’”- Aaron Mate said on the Jimmy Dore Show:

“The Biden campaign-backed Hunter Biden 2020 intelligence letter was crafted by the same "Beacon Global Strategies" intel officials involved in the 2016 Hillary campaign effort declaring Bernie as a threat to national security...

This means that, in two consecutive presidential elections, the Democratic candidate generated fake claims about Russia, spread them through intel officials and media stenographers, and did so to deflect from factual disclosures about their corruption..."

Iraq MPs Demand Halt To Jordan Oil Sales Over Support For US Strikes

The lawmakers want to end subsidized oil sales to Jordan after accusing the kingdom of assisting US forces carrying out airstrikes which killed 17 Iraqis

Iraqi lawmakers have called for a parliament session to discuss halting the sale of subsidized oil to Jordan following a wave of US strikes in Iraq and Syria.

Rudaw reported on 5 February that the lawmakers accuse Jordan of providing material support for the US attacks that killed at least 17 people in Iraq on Friday.

Mustafa Sanad, an independent Shia lawmaker, told Rudaw on Sunday, "When the Americans come to bomb us, who provides the fuel to their planes?" Sanad asked, referring to Jordan.

"They receive it from neighboring countries, like Jordan and others. Jordan benefits from a third of the Iraqi Central Bank's foreign currency transactions. We have to pressure them to stop this... We should stop selling crude oil to Jordan."

The US strikes followed a drone strike last week, which killed at least three US soldiers and injured dozens more at Tower 22, a US military base in northeast Jordan near the Syrian border. The US occupies another base, Al-Tanf, on the Syrian side of the border, where it has trained members of ISIS and other armed groups seeking to topple the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad.

dynamic seen with the US targeting individual banks in Turkey and the UAE with sanctions, after the nations ignored the US’s threats I highlighted in my March 2022 series....

The real question, is why should the sovereign country of Iraq — whose economic insecurity the US already bears large responsibility for, having destroyed the country 2 decades ago based off fabricated “intelligence” of WMDs[lies] — why should Iraq have to beg the US permission to conduct business with its neighbor that is in its own interest?

Somewhere in the answer to that question, is the prime reason for why BRICS is rising..

Does Fluoride in Drinking Water Lower IQ? Question Looms Large in Court Battle

🇺🇸
@COVID19Up: A long-simmering scientific battle took on new life this week, as experts clashed in a San Francisco courtroom over whether the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) should ban fluoridation of drinking water to protect fetuses and children from the risk of neurodevelopmental problems.

The case, being heard in a federal district court, “is precedent setting,” says Lynn Bergeson, a managing partner of Bergeson & Campbell who focuses on chemical toxicity. Rarely have judges had to “manage the enormity of this record of scientific evidence. … That’s why there’s a lot of attention focused on this right now.”

Adding fluoride, a common mineral, to drinking water lessens tooth decay in children and adults by 25%. The CDC calls fluoridation, which began in 1946 in the United States and is decided by local water districts, one of 10 “great public health achievements” of the 20th century. But from the get-go, some activist groups worried about potential harm. And over the past few decades, studies of laboratory animals and of communities where drinking water naturally contains fluoride have hinted that high levels might affect brain development.

The current case has put the spotlight on an unpublished assessment by the federal government’s National Toxicology Program (NTP). It reported “moderate confidence” that drinking water containing fluoride at levels at least twice as high as those recommended by the federal government is associated with lower IQ in children. The Fluoride Action Network (FAN) and other groups argue that such data indicate EPA should be regulating fluoride under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).

During opening arguments on 31 January, the attorney for the plaintiffs, Michael Connett, highlighted babies fed formula made with tap water as a “critical vulnerable group being exposed to the highest dose of fluoride of any age group in the population. That is a major cause for concern.” He argued that if EPA was aware of a different compound that posed a similar potential threat to newborns, the agency wouldn’t hesitate to regulate it. “I don’t think we need to speculate about what EPA would do with that scenario,” he said.

The trial began in June 2020 but the judge suspended it months later to wait for publication of the NTP report.

Fluoride Trial: NTP Scientific Director Tells The Defender What He Couldn’t Tell the Court

The National Toxicology Program’s (NTP) former scientific director Brian Berridge, DVM, Ph.D., on Monday (Feb 5) testified in the landmark fluoride trial. The judge didn’t allow testimony about possible political influence over the NTP report’s publication, but Berridge told The Defender after the hearing that such pressures raised serious concerns for public health.

Joe Biden’s DOJ Found That Joe Biden Did Nothing Wrong by Taking Classified Material, Storing It in His Office & Garage

An upcoming special counsel report is critical of the handling of classified documents by President Joe Biden and his aides but does not any recommend criminal charges, The Washington Post reported Tuesday (Feb 6).

The newspaper said the report by special counsel Robert Hur into the discovery of classified documents at Biden's home and former office was expected to be released in the coming days.

Hur was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland last year after classified material dating from Biden's time as vice president was found in 2022 at his residence in Wilmington, Delaware, and in a former office.

U.S. to Increase Military Aid to Guyana Amid Tensions with Venezuela

The US will increase military aid to Guyana amid tensions with neighboring Venezuela over the disputed Guayana Essequibo region, The Associated Press reported on Monday (Feb 5).

The AP report did not detail how much the US will provide but said the US will help Guyana acquire new helicopters, a fleet of military drones, and radar technology for the first time.

In 2023, the US provided Guyana with about $2.7 million in total aid, including over $400,000 from the Pentagon’s International Military Education & Training program, which trains foreign militaries. Guyana is a small country with a population of only around 800,000. According to AP, the Caribbean nation’s military numbers less than 5,000 troops.

The US has been stepping up military cooperation with Guyana after Venezuelans voted in a referendum late last year to make the Essequibo region a Venezuelan state.

Venezuela and Guyana agreed in December not to use military force to resolve the dispute, but tensions remain high as Venezuela deployed 6,000 troops to its border with Guyana.
