Election Of New Lebanese President 'Puts Pressure' On Israel To Withdraw Troops: Report

Israel recently began a limited withdrawal from south Lebanon but has signaled that it may be planning to extend its presence

Hebrew media reported on 10 January that the election of Joseph Aoun as president of Lebanon will increase pressure on Israel to withdraw its troops in the south of the country.

Israeli newspaper Walla wrote that Aoun’s election on 9 January, which broke over two years of political deadlock in Lebanon, “is expected to increase pressure on Israel to complete the withdrawal of IDF forces from southern Lebanon by the end of January,” citing senior US and Israeli officials.

The report notes that the new president, formerly the commander of Lebanon’s Armed Forces (LAF), enjoys broad international and Arab support – particularly from the US and Saudi Arabia.

“The Israelis will soon begin to receive the message from all over the world that they need to come to terms with reality and that there is no way they can stay in Lebanon,” a US official told the outlet.

If the army does not withdraw, it will “find itself in conflict with the international community.”

Israeli officials cite the existence of the new HTS extremist government as a pretext to occupy Syrian land

Israel plans to establish a “control zone” 15 kilometers deep inside Syria and an intelligence “sphere of influence” extending 60 kilometers, claiming the new government in Damascus includes “the most dangerous people in the world,” Ynet reported on 10 December.

“The Israeli army will maintain a presence to ensure that the new regime's allies in Syria cannot fire rockets toward the Golan Heights,” the officials told the Hebrew newspaper.

They stressed “the need for a 60-kilometer sphere of influence inside Syria under the control of Israeli intelligence to monitor and prevent potential threats from developing.”

Israel claims that the new Syrian government, led by the former Al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), poses a threat to Israel that is ignored by western countries.

Noting recent terror attacks in the US, the Kurdish commander reiterated the threat posed by thousands of imprisoned ISIS fighters, whom US officials have referred to as 'an army in waiting'

The commander-in-chief of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), General Mazloum Abdi, has called on US President-elect Donald Trump to keep thousands of troops inside Syria during his government.

“The key factor of stabilization in this area is the US presence on the ground,” Abdi told The Guardian on 9 January, claiming that if 2,000 US troops occupying Syria's largest oil fields and a massive military base in the south are withdrawn, it would lead to the “resurgence” of “many factions, including [ISIS].”

“The recent terrorist attacks in the US itself [are] an indication to the incoming president that the terrorist threat is increasing,” Abdi added.

The Kurdish military commander also reiterated warnings that SDF-controlled prison camps holding thousands of ISIS fighters are at risk of being swarmed by extremist armed groups, which he claims are seeking to “take advantage” of the ongoing clashes between the SDF and the Syrian National Army (SNA).

“US forces withdrawal [would lead to] another chaotic situation, and this may lead to another civil war since many factions are threatening the Kurds,” the Kurdish general said.

Lebanon Receives US 'guarantee' Of Israeli Withdrawal Before Ceasefire Ends: Report

The ceasefire terms require Israel to withdraw from Lebanese territory after a 60-day period that began in late November

US Special Envoy Amos Hochstein told Lebanese officials that the US guarantees Israel will withdraw its forces occupying southern Lebanon before the 60-day deadline, Al-Akhbar reported.

The Lebanese newspaper wrote that Hochstein provided a detailed withdrawal schedule during a meeting with the committee responsible for monitoring the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.

The withdrawal deadline was stipulated in the 27 November ceasefire that ended 14 months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

Israel is required to withdraw its forces from Lebanese territory, while Hezbollah is required to withdraw its forces behind the Litani River, which lies about 30 km from the border with Israel. The Lebanese Army and UN forces are tasked with deploying in the border areas evacuated by Hezbollah.

A senior Israeli official told Israeli Haaretz that Israel would pull its forces out “if the terms of its ceasefire deal with Hezbollah will be kept.”

Trump Says He Is Setting Up A Meeting With Putin

The Kremlin appeared to confirm that a summit was being planned

President-elect Donald Trump said he is working on setting up a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In response, Moscow said Putin is willing to sit down with Trump without preconditions.

On Friday, Trump was asked about potentially meeting Putin or Chinese President Xi Jinping. “To be determined,” the President-elect said, referring to a summit with Xi. He added, “But President Putin wants to meet. He’s said that even publicly, and we have to get that war over with. That’s a bloody mess.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he did not have any details about a meeting between Trump and Putin to share, but indicated there may be some diplomatic progress. “We see that Mr. Trump also declares his readiness to solve problems through dialogue. We welcome this,” he explained. “Apparently, after Mr. Trump enters the Oval Office, there will be some movement.”

Peskov added, “no conditions are required” to begin talks. President Joe Biden and President Zelensky have maintained that Russian troops must withdraw from Ukraine to end the war. The preconditions for negotiations has resulted in no diplomacy between Washington, Kiev, and Moscow.

On the campaign trail, Trump often lamented the massive loss of life from the war in Ukraine and pledged to bring the conflict to a close on his first day in office. However, since winning the election in November, Trump has tapped a number of war hawks to staff his new administration.

Thieves Cut Fence, Steal Humvees, Equipment From California Army Reserve

Three Humvees were stolen from an Army Reserve Center in Tustin, along with other military equipment, according to a police statement.

On Wednesday, January 8, between 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., unknown suspects entered a storage warehouse at the center.

Multiple storage lockers were found with their locks removed, and gear was missing.

There was also an unsuccessful attempt to cut a lock to uniform storage.

The suspects cut a fence to access a military vehicle parking lot, where they stole three Humvees before leaving at an unknown time.

The Army has stated that there was no loss of weapons or ammunition besides what is below:

- One armored Humvee Model: M1151A1, ADMIN: HHC-06
- Two cloth-door Humvee Model: M1097s, ADMIN: HQ-61 and HQ-81
- Eight machine gun vehicle mounts
- Seven free-standing machine gun tripods
- Medical equipment
- 40 pairs of binoculars
- 18 bayonets

Newsom Defends Wildfire Response, Tells Biden Online “Misinformation” Needs To Be Combatted

Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) shifted focus to combating “misinformation” during a briefing on the devastating wildfires ravaging Los Angeles. The session included President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, with Newsom and Bass addressing concerns over their administration’s preparedness as the fires claimed at least 10 lives and destroyed countless homes.

Conducted in a hybrid format, the meeting saw Biden and Harris in the Oval Office while Newsom, Bass, and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell joined via video call. Newsom described the unprecedented destruction fueled by what he called “hurricane-force winds, the likes of which we’ve never imagined in our lifetime.” He then pivoted to warn about the spread of misinformation related to the disaster.

“We’ve got to deal with this misinformation. There were hurricane-force winds of mis- and disinformation — lies,” Newsom stated. “People want to divide this country, and we’re gonna have to address that as well. And it breaks my heart, as people are suffering and struggling that we’re up against those hurricane force forces as well.”

Expressing frustration, Newsom added, “And that’s just a point of personal privilege that I share that with you because it infects real people that are out there. People I meet every single day, people the mayor has been meeting with, and they’re having conversations that are not the typical conversations you’d have at this time be in. And you wonder where this stuff comes from, and it’s very damaging as well, but we’re here to get the job done; to be here for folks to focus.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom is facing a barrage of criticism from various quarters, highlighting several contentious issues, particularly related to a lack of preparation for combatting wildfires under his governance.
