Gaza'z Civil Defense said the bodies of an estimated 2,840 Palestinians had 'evaporated' due to the immense heat of Israeli bombs
The Gaza Civil Defense said on 20 January it faces the immense and difficult task of searching for the bodies of thousands of people believed to be missing under the rubble of destroyed homes, buildings, and facilities in the besieged enclave and whose names have not been added to the official list of those killed by Israel in the war.
“We are searching for 10,000 martyrs whose bodies remain under the rubble,” said Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for the Palestinian Civil Emergency Services.
Officially, at least 47,035 Palestinians have been killed and 111,091 injured in Israel's war on Gaza since 7 October 2023.
Gaza's Health Ministry said in the past 24 hours, 60 people were killed, and another 62 bodies were recovered as the ceasefire between Hamas and the Israeli forces went into effect on 19 January.
In a statement, the Civil Defense reported that the bodies of an estimated 2,840 Palestinians had “evaporated” due to the Israeli army's use of weapons that “produce temperatures between 7,000-9,000 degrees Celsius, melting everything in the center of the explosion.”

A 14-year-old Palestinian was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank overnight
Israeli Jewish settlers rampaged through several Palestinian towns in the West Bank on 19 January in a show of anger at a ceasefire deal that saw the end of fighting between the Israeli army and Hamas in Gaza and the release of Palestinian prisoners and Israeli captives.
Settlers across the West Bank organized themselves in an effort to disrupt the release of Palestinians held captive in Israeli prisons and detention centers, where torture and rape are common.
Accompanied by soldiers, the settlers attacked Palestinian cars and closed several main roads in Turmus Ayy, Atara, Ein Siniya, Ein Ayoub, Qalqilya, and Jaba on Sunday evening.
In Sinjil, two houses were torched along with four vehicles, WAFA news agency reported.
Footage released on social media shows Israeli settlers hurling stones and Molotov cocktails in their raids.

President-elect Joe Biden told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he was concerned about reports that President Trump is considering a host of preemptive pardons for his adult children and lawyer Rudy Giuliani, as well as the possibility of one for himself.
“It concerns me in terms of what kind of precedent it sets and how the rest of the world looks (at) us as a nation of laws and justice,” Biden said during his first joint interview with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris since winning the election. The full interview will air at 9 p.m. ET.
He added that his Justice Department will “operate independently on those issues” and how to respond to any Trump pardons.
“I’m not going to be telling them what they have to do and don’t have to do,” Biden said. “I’m not going to be saying, ‘go prosecute A, B or C’, I’m not going to be telling them. That’s not the role, it’s not my Justice Department, it’s the people’s Justice Department. So the persons or person I pick to run that department are going to be people who are going to have the independent capacity to decide who gets prosecuted, who doesn’t.”
Biden concluded that his administration would not approach pardons in the same way as Trump, adding, “It’s going to be a totally different way in which we approach the justice system.”

Violent Clashes Continue In North Syria As Damascus Seeks To Disarm Us-Backed Kurds
Forces from the new Syrian government are joining Turkish-backed elements in the war against the Kurdish-led SDF in the country's northeast
Violent clashes between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) continue in northeast Syria amid multi-sided negotiations for the future control of the strategic region and the nature of the new Syrian state.
Eight SNA fighters were killed and eight SDF fighters wounded in clashes near the Tishreen Dam, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on 20 January, bringing the death toll from fighting between the two groups to 440 people since December.
The SDF is backed by US troops occupying northeast Syria, home to the country's major oil fields and grain-producing regions.
The SNA and SDF have been fighting at the dam and nearby city of Manbij since Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), led by Ahmad al-Sharaa (Abu Mohammad al-Julani), took control of the Syrian state on 8 December, toppling the government of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.
HTS militants representing the new government in Damascus appear ready to join the conflict on the side of the SNA. Syria TV reported on Monday that a military convoy of HTS militants has arrived on the frontlines near the Tishreen Dam area.

Trump Says He Will Designate Mexican Cartels As ‘Terrorist Organizations,’ Vows To ‘Take Back’ Panama Canal
The label for cartels could be the first step toward military action
President Donald Trump signaled in his inauguration speech on Monday that he was preparing for confrontations in the Western Hemisphere by vowing to label Mexican cartels as “foreign terrorist organizations” and “take back” the Panama Canal.
Trump said in the speech that he would be deploying the military to the southern border with Mexico to “repel the disastrous invasion of our country” and that he would be signing an executive order to designate “the cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.”
According to Fox News , the designations will apply to Mexican cartels and two gangs : MS-13 and Tren de Aragua. The action will designate the groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGT).
The designations amount to severe sanctions that seize any assets the targets may have in the US and bar them from entering the country. The designations also open up anyone for criminal prosecution who provides “material support” to the groups, meaning anyone forced to pay protection money to the cartels or gangs could be potentially targeted.
Terror designations could be a first step toward military action against Mexican cartels, an idea favored by many Republicans and people close to Trump despite the obvious risks.

The label for cartels could be the first step toward military action
President Donald Trump signaled in his inauguration speech on Monday that he was preparing for confrontations in the Western Hemisphere by vowing to label Mexican cartels as “foreign terrorist organizations” and “take back” the Panama Canal.
Trump said in the speech that he would be deploying the military to the southern border with Mexico to “repel the disastrous invasion of our country” and that he would be signing an executive order to designate “the cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.”
According to Fox News , the designations will apply to Mexican cartels and two gangs : MS-13 and Tren de Aragua. The action will designate the groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) and Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGT).
The designations amount to severe sanctions that seize any assets the targets may have in the US and bar them from entering the country. The designations also open up anyone for criminal prosecution who provides “material support” to the groups, meaning anyone forced to pay protection money to the cartels or gangs could be potentially targeted.
Terror designations could be a first step toward military action against Mexican cartels, an idea favored by many Republicans and people close to Trump despite the obvious risks.

A Ukrainian Victory Was Never Biden’s Goal: Time Magazine
The Biden administration never promised a Ukrainian military victory
President Biden spent hundreds of billions of dollars supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia, but according to a report from Time Magazine , a Ukrainian victory was never his goal.
Throughout the nearly three-year proxy war, the Biden administration never set any clear goals and only repeated mantras, such as the promise to support Ukraine for “as long as it takes.”
Eric Green, who was on Biden’s National Security Council at the time of the invasion, told Time that the administration never gave any promises to help Ukraine take back the land Russian forces had captured.
“We were deliberately not talking about the territorial parameters,” Green said. “That was not going to be a success story ultimately. The more important objective was for Ukraine to survive as a sovereign, democratic country free to pursue integration with the West.”
The report said Biden set three objectives for the war: ensure Ukraine would survive as a sovereign state, keep the US and its allies united, and avoid a direct war with Russia.
