WEF Director Backs UN’s Pro-Censorship AI Watchdog, Praises France’s AI Summit On Control, And Announces 2025 Focus On AI Governance
The World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting is coming up and top representatives of this unelected group gathering global elites are “coming out of the woodwork” once again, together with a predictable set of policy endorsements.
Many of those policies are built on ideas that originate and were first publicly voiced at the Davos meetings, to then over time become formalized by top-level international institutions like the United Nations (UN), making it somewhat difficult to understand which is older – the chicken or the egg.
Ahead of the start of this year’s summit, WEF Managing Director Mirek Dusek told a news conference that the 2025 WEF meeting will focus on “AI” – specifically around “ AI governance ” and how governments handle the technology.
At the same time, Dusek was praising related censorship and surveillance initiatives such as the upcoming France Summit for Action on Artificial Intelligence but also giving a nod to the UN’s High-level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence.
The latter, in its role as a global AI watchdog, published a report in September that goes into a number of recommendations tied to surveillance and censorship.
Here, Dusek appears to refer to it when he says that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “achieved important success in September” by establishing a body referred to as “the first installment in terms of international collaboration around AI.”

The UN estimates reconstruction of the strip could cost up to $80 billion and take 15 years due to the destruction from Israeli bombing
Some $10 billion will be needed to rebuild Gaza’s destroyed health system over the next five to seven years, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported on 17 January.
“The needs are massive,” said Rick Peeperkorn, the UN health agency’s representative in the Palestinian territories, following an initial assessment completed by the agency.
Efforts to assess the damage caused by Israel’s unrelenting 15-month bombing campaign began after a deal was reached for a ceasefire and prisoner swap between Israel and Hamas was agreed to Friday.
The Israeli bombing campaign and ground operations killed over 46,000 Palestinians, the majority women and children, according to the Gaza health ministry. However, the death toll is believed to be undercounted by 40 percent, according to a Lancet study.
Peeperkorn said his team’s initial estimate of the cost to rebuild just the health sector was “even more than $3 billion for the first 1.5 years and then actually $10 billion for the five to seven years.”

❗️US President Donald Trump has lifted sanctions imposed by his predecessor on extremist Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.
Just hours after being sworn in for a second term, the Trump administration announced late Monday that the president had rescinded Biden’s sanctions.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich welcomed Trump’s decision, stating:
"I sincerely thank President Donald Trump for his just decision to lift the sanctions imposed by the Biden administration against settlers and activists in right-wing organizations," he wrote on X. "These sanctions were a severe and blatant foreign intervention in Israel's internal affairs and an unjustified violation of democratic principles and the mutual respect that should guide relations between friendly nations."
Itamar Ben-Gvir, the former Israeli National Security Minister, described Trump’s cancellation of the sanctions as "historic."

Abdul Rahman Krij, a local journalist, spoke to Al Jazeera and said that Israeli forces started constructing this base 2 days ago. He added that Israel bulldozed hundreds of forest trees surrounding the area where the new point is being built.
Krij says that the construction includes fortifications extending about a kilometer towards the town of Jebata al-Khashab. Additionally, new roads are being opened towards the border strip with the occupied Golan Heights.
He estimates that the area is approximately 50 dunums, encompassing agricultural lands with fruit trees owned by residents of Jebata al-Khashab.

Therefore, what is it that is being built?

US-Backed Kurds Reject Handing Over ISIS Prisoners To De Facto Syrian Govt
The new government in Damascus is led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an ISIS offshoot
The US-backed Kurdish forces guarding ISIS militants at a jail in northeast Syria say they are opposed to handing control of the facility to officials from the new Syrian government in Damascus, Reuters reported on 21 January.
At a prison in the city of Hasakah, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are holding some 4,500 ISIS fighters, including many foreigners.
A Kurdish officer – whose identity is concealed by a ski mask – speaking with Reuters said the SDF, which occupied large swathes of northeast Syria in partnership with the US military, will not hand over control of the prison to Damascus.
“Sharing it with the new government will not be acceptable. Protecting this prison is the responsibility of the coalition and the SDF only,” he said.
Members of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an offshoot of ISIS, toppled the government of former president Bashar al-Assad and took control of the Syrian state on 8 December.
