Before 2017 ends, we would like to remind everyone that the deadline for nominations for
The JESP/ESPAnet doctoral Prize 2017/2018 is January 10th 2018.
(The prize is awarded for papers presented at an ESPAnet conference, workshop or seminar in 2017).
We encourage you to nominate doctoral students and /or encourage authors to submit papers they have presented in 2017.
The author(s) must not yet have been awarded a doctorate at the closing date of January 10th 2018.
The prize-winning paper is provided with high-profile publication in the Journal of European Social Policy.
The winner also receives 1 year’s free subnoscription to the journal.
The 2016/2017 prizewinner Tijs Laenen said this about winning the 2017-Prize:
“In addition to being an honourable recognition of your hard work,
the JESP/ESPAnet Doctoral Researcher Prize is a great opportunity to take one of your papers to the next level.
At the ESPAnet conference in Rotterdam, where I presented my paper for the first time, I was already under the impression that it was well received.
Some of the participant’s words of praise even convinced me to submit to the prize.
The detailed feedback of the anonymous reviewers, however, made me realize that much work remained to be done,
as they made it clear that there was still ample room for improvement.
Thanks to their stimulating feedback, the paper evolved from a Dutch case study to a study whose findings and implications stretch far beyond the Netherlands,
and hopefully inspires future research on the link between welfare institutions and welfare attitudes in other countries.
To all PhD-students who are in doubt of submitting their paper to the JESP/ESPAnet prize,
I can only tell: If you want to better your work, do not hesitate to participate!”
More information about the Prize and submitting is on ESPAnet’s homepage: www.espanet.org

International Workshop on Public Policy(International Public Policy Association)
University of Pittsburgh
June 26th to 28th 2018.
The workshop focuses on the role of emotions as an agent of policy change. More specifically, it will explore the function of emotional intensity in the construction and transformation of public problems and their treatment by public authorities. While studies on the role of emotions are rather abundant when it comes to studying political behavior, little research can be found from a policy perspective. Nonetheless, a new literature that seeks to shed light on public policy through emotional inputs is emerging, also known as the “affective turn” present in several social science disciplines such as geography (Anderson and Smith, 2001; Bondi, Davidson and Smith, 2005), political science (Brader, 2011; Marcus, 2002) or sociology of collective action (Aminzade and McAdam, 2001; Latté, 2015; Groenendyk, 2011). The workshop theme is guided by the general research question of how do emotions participate in the construction and transformation of territorial public problems? The role of emotions in public policy can be seen as central to the problematization process because of its association with values and beliefs. These generate reactions, either underreaction or overreaction (Maor, 2016), which in turn contribute to the transformation of public problems. Through the contributors’ work, we intend to explore how citizens’ emotional reactions to specific events transform certain public issues into public problems, both in nature and scope.
The workshop has three objectives: 1) examining how the emotional dimensions in the public policy process fit into current theoretical discussions in political science and public administration; 2) generating knowledge on the emotional construction of public problems with an important territorial dimension. This will fill gaps in urban and regional public policy literature, while at the same time creating more explicit links between public policy analysis and urban and regional studies; 3) working toward submitting a special issue for publication in Policy and Society.
Papers submitted are expected to explore the contribution of emotional input in the construction and transformation of public problems through case studies or theoretical reflections on existing approaches to public problems. Papers focusing on methodological considerations linked to the study of emotions in public policy are also welcome. Although open to other levels of analysis, the workshop will prioritize contributions at the territorial scale as a relevant, accessible and relatively underexplored laboratory for observation and analysis. Indeed, although it would make it possible to better understand the narration of local and regional policy issues, very few studies focus their analysis on the emotional dimensions that shape local and regional public policies. The territorial angle helps to delineate an otherwise very broad topic. This workshop will provide an opportunity to engage in a discussion with both public policy analysis and urban and territorial studies to document the inescapable link between public problems, emotions, and territory. It is meant to be a place for international and multisectoral exchanges.

The Centre of Excellence in Research on Ageing and Care (CoE AgeCare) is one of the 12 Centres of Excellence that are funded by the Academy of Finland in 2018–2025. The Centre includes more than 20 social policy analysts, sociologists and gerontologists from the Universities of Jyväskylä, Tampere and Helsinki who work together in analysing the challenges and opportunities that the ongoing societal transformation into to the aged or the superaged society is bringing forward. Research teams of the CoE are led by prof Teppo Kröger, prof Marja Jylhä, Dr Outi Jolanki, Dr Sirpa Wrede and Dr Sakari Taipale. This is not a merely Finnish project as we are working together with a large global network of leading researchers of ageing and care, and as we address international and global dimensions of ageing and aim to contribute to the international debate.
CoE AgeCare has now started and just published its home site, which also includes a welcome blog. From now on, for the next eight years, the home site will follow keenly the research work, events, publications and other activities of the CoE.
Among its activities, the Centre will organise a number of international workshops, conferences and summer/winter schools that will support particularly early career researchers to develop their skills, perspectives and academic networks. The CoE will organise its International Kick-off Conference and first Summer/Autumn School in Jyväskylä, Finland in Autumn 2018. Closer information on this event will follow during the spring.
