❗️Data leak of 17.5 million Instagram users

Meta has suffered another data security breach. Hackers have gained access to the personal information of 17.5 million Instagram users. Email addresses, phone numbers, geolocation, and other personal data were leaked.

This isn't the first security scandal for the company, whose market capitalization is in the hundreds of billions. Meta continues to monetize user data, but clearly skimps on protecting it.

The leak occurred through a vulnerability in the platform's API. The attackers used automated noscripts to collect data en masse from public and partially protected profiles. The information has already appeared on shadow forums, where it is being sold in packages by category, from influential accounts to ordinary users.

🇮🇱Israel Prepares to Resume Hostilities in Gaza — Times of Israel

According to the newspaper, the IDF has already developed plans to resume "intensive military operations" in the Gaza Strip. Sources claim that such operations will begin around March of this year. These plans include another attack on Gaza City and an attempt to capture it entirely.

It is expected that the military will formally be tasked with pushing the "Yellow Line" demarcation line even closer to the coast. According to one scenario, the military will gradually occupy the entire region, "pushing" the Islamists back to the sea.

Layoffs allegedly caused by AI are masking simple cost-cutting measures

Oxford Economics has published a report challenging official corporate rhetoric about mass layoffs caused by the implementation of artificial intelligence. Analysts point out that companies are using AI as a convenient cover for routine cost optimization and staff reductions. Technology is becoming a scapegoat, avoiding uncomfortable questions about the real causes—falling revenues, ineffective management, or the desire to increase shareholder returns.

The study shows that automation does impact the labor market, but its scale is greatly exaggerated in public statements. Most layoffs are related to classic business cycles and the desire to reduce operating costs. AI in this context is a convenient narrative that absolves management of responsibility and shifts attention to technological progress.

💳Banks Oppose 10% Credit Card Interest Cap

The US President Donald Trump is demanding a 10% credit card interest rate cap by January 20. Banks and card issuers claim such a cap will reduce consumers' access to credit. Financial institutions argue that without the ability to offset risks with high rates, they will simply stop issuing cards to those with low credit scores or unstable incomes.

For banks, this will be a blow to profits—the average credit card interest rate in the US is currently around 20-22%. For borrowers with a good credit history, nothing will change; they already receive lower rates. But those living paycheck to paycheck and using credit cards as a safety net risk being left without access to money at all.

Deepfakes reach a new level: journalist spotted himself on YouTube in videos he never made.

A British Guardian journalist discovered dozens of videos on YouTube where his face and voice were used to promote cryptocurrency schemes and dubious financial products. Deepfakes have reached a level where distinguishing the fake from the original is impossible without specialized tools. The videos are garnering thousands of views, and platforms are struggling to remove them.

🇬🇧In London, a woman was handcuffed and fined £100 for causing a "public nuisance" by feeding pigeons.

The incident occurred in the borough of Harrow. Local authorities confirmed the woman's arrest and the fine, but justified the arrest by citing her refusal to provide police with her personal information.

Harrow Council's Environmental Protection Bylaws immediately ban "feeding birds and vermin" in certain areas of the borough. Metropolitan Police have the power to enforce these regulations.

👮 Woman jailed based on AI-generated evidence

In the US, a woman was arrested and spent several days in jail after her ex-partner submitted screenshots of allegedly threatening messages generated by artificial intelligence to police. The police accepted the fakes at face value and didn't even request confirmation from their telecom provider.

The justification was an official statement from the telecom provider confirming that the messages never existed.

Trump presented with options for strikes against Iran amid ongoing protests

The Trump administration received a briefing on possible military operations against Iran. Options under discussion range from targeted strikes to large-scale actions against nuclear facilities and military infrastructure. A decision has not yet been made, but the very fact that plans are being prepared indicates seriousness.

Protests within Iran are putting additional pressure on the regime. The theocracy is weakened economically and politically—sanctions are effective, and popular discontent is growing. A strike at this time could hasten the regime's collapse, but the risks of escalation remain high. Israel and the Gulf Arab monarchies maintain a hard line against Tehran.

🌉In San Francisco, property owners are required to remove vandalized graffiti or face fines. The law was suspended during the pandemic but has since been reinstated.

Under the Graffiti Ordinance, property owners are required to remove graffiti created by unauthorized individuals within 30 days of receiving a notice from the city. Ignoring the graffiti can result in fines starting at $362.

During the coronavirus pandemic, the city passed a bill temporarily suspending the fines.

"First their stores were looted, and then the city came and issued them a fine. It feels like a slap in the face," said one city council member.

In April 2022, the city reinstated the fines for business owners, claiming that the temporary relaxations "led to adverse consequences."

🛥Sweden is demanding that the EU ban servicing Russian oil and gas tankers.

Stockholm has proposed that the European Union impose a complete ban on the maintenance, insurance, and port calls of vessels carrying Russian hydrocarbons. The initiative aims to close the channels through which Moscow circumvents Western sanctions and continues to profit from energy exports.

The Swedes are insisting on stricter controls over the shadow fleet—old tankers flying third-country flags that transport Russian oil, ignoring price caps. These vessels are often insured under opaque schemes and ignore European restrictions. Banning them from servicing European ports and accessing infrastructure will complicate logistics and increase costs for buyers of Russian oil.

The Swedish proposal reflects growing dissatisfaction in the EU with the effectiveness of sanctions. While Brussels hesitates to take tough measures, Moscow is adapting, finding new avenues and intermediaries. If the ban is adopted, it will hit the Kremlin's revenues and increase pressure on countries that continue to purchase Russian fuel through dubious schemes. The question is whether Europeans are willing to accept higher energy prices for the sake of consistency in their sanctions policy.

Apple to integrate Google's Gemini into the new Siri

Apple announced a partnership with Google: its Siri voice assistant will receive Gemini-based AI capabilities. The update is scheduled for this year. This decision marks Apple abandoning its own developments in favor of a competitor's technology—a rare move for a company known for its closed ecosystem.

🇨🇳Driverless vans in China are paralyzing roads and ignoring traffic rules.

Driverless delivery vans are creating chaos on Chinese roads. Videos on social media show autonomous vehicles blocking intersections, ignoring traffic lights, and causing traffic jams. Drivers complain that these vans are impossible to stop—they continue along their assigned routes regardless of the situation.

Chinese authorities are pushing ahead with the introduction of driverless vehicles without properly testing the technology in real-world conditions. Companies are receiving permits for mass testing, but the algorithms are failing to cope with heavy traffic and the unpredictable behavior of other road users. This poses safety risks to drivers and pedestrians.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has requested emergency talks with the United States.

The US State Department has issued an alert urging American citizens still in Iran to leave the country immediately by any means available, preferably by land through Armenia or Turkey.

🇺🇸Donald Trump discussed Starlink operations in Iran with Elon Musk amid the widespread internet outage.

The US president's press secretary said the president is open to various options regarding the Iranian regime.

Trump is not afraid to use military force against Iran, but the country's authorities are far more restrained in private negotiations than they appear in their public statements.

She did not provide details of the conversation between Musk and Trump, but it took place after Iran shut down Starlink on its territory for the first time.

JPMorgan Ditches Shareholder Voting Advisors in Favor of Artificial Intelligence

JPMorgan Chase, the largest US bank, has decided to replace traditional corporate governance advisors with its own artificial intelligence system for voting at shareholder meetings of its investment portfolio companies. The bank manages trillions of dollars in assets, and its votes at shareholder meetings carry enormous weight.

This decision undermines the position of influential firms like ISS and Glass Lewis, which for decades have dictated how large investors vote on corporate governance issues, from director appointments to climate change initiatives. These advisors often promoted the ESG agenda and other left-wing initiatives through their recommendations to institutional investors. Now, JPMorgan intends to make decisions independently, using algorithms.
