May 19th marks the Greek Genocide Remembrance Day.

The Christian Ottoman Greek population of Anatolia suffered systematic killings during WWI and its aftermath (1914–1922) carried out by the government of the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish national movement, based on religion and ethnicity.

The indigenous Greek population of the Ottoman Empire was slaughtered, forced into deportations that involved death marches, expulsions, summary exécutions. The Eastern Orthodox cultural, historical, & religious monuments were massively destructed.

Hundreds of thousand Ottoman Greeks died. Most of the refugees and survivors fled to Greece, some found refuge in the Russian Empire. Those remaining were transferred to Greece under the terms of the later 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey, which barred the return of the refugees.

Other ethnic groups were similarly attacked by the Ottoman Empire during this period, including Assyrians and Armenians. WWI Allies condemned those government sponsored massacres. In 2007, the International Association of Genocide Scholars passed a resolution recognizing the Ottoman campaign against its Christian minorities, including the Greeks, as genocide.

In March 2015, the National Assembly of Armenia unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing both the Greek and Assyrian genocides. Turkey rejects the word genocide.

107 years after the beginning of the Greek genocide, we stand to remind that we share and feel the pain inflicted on the Greeks and to express our condolences to the descendants of the innocent victims.

Turkey worried Iceland could recognize the Armenian Genocide
The Speaker of Turkish Parliament Mustafa Sentop on Monday asked his counterpart in Iceland Steingrimur Sigfusson not to back the draft resolution on Armenian Genocide.

In a letter to Sigfusson, Mustafa Sentop said the draft resolution submitted in Iceland parliament was “built on groundless allegations.”
“I learned that a draft resolution, which built on groundless allegations and aimed at recognizing the events of 1915 as genocide, has been submitted to your parliament. It is obvious that such unfounded attempts, which we know that they emerged with the provocation of some circles, will result in nothing but shadowing the good relations that exist between our countries,” Sentop said in the letter.
