From Idea to Impact: How innovation can drive green change

What began as a simple idea grew into a green solution that transforms waste into value—creating jobs, supporting communities, and contributing to a cleaner environment. His journey shows how locally driven innovation can strengthen Ethiopia’s circular economy.

If you have an idea that can reduce waste, create jobs, and benefit your community, the Green Business Incubation Program can help you build it through practical training, expert mentorship, and seed funding.

At the Youth in Charge SDG Summit in Kigali, Mekdim Gulilat, Country Manager at Reach for Change, shared a powerful reminder:

Youth are not waiting to be empowered. They are already building solutions.

In her keynote, Mekdim spoke about social entrepreneurship as a practical pathway for young people to turn lived challenges into sustainable solutions. She emphasized that real change happens when young leaders are trusted, supported, and connected to systems that allow their ideas to grow.

She highlighted that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is not only about policies and targets. It is about people. It is about courage. And it is about creating the right conditions for youth led innovation to thrive.

At Reach for Change, we believe that when young social entrepreneurs are given the tools, networks, and trust they deserve, they do not just adapt to systems. They reshape them.

Youth are not the future of change. They are the drivers of change today.

When Azeb G/Meskel saw an opportunity to turn industrial waste into a purified water treatment solution, she discovered more than a solution—she found a purpose.

What began as a simple idea of turning ash from sugar mills into a locally sourced alternative to activated carbon grew into a powerful green innovation that removes color, odor, and heavy metals from wastewater, cuts treatment costs by up to 80%, and supports a circular economy.

The journey wasn’t easy. But with persistence and support from partners like Reach for Change, EcoDyePure transformed an untapped waste byproduct into a solution that benefits both the environment and society.

Now it is your turn.

If you are a green entrepreneur working on waste, circularity, or sustainability challenges in Addis Ababa, the Green Business Incubator is where your impact can grow.

On December 30, 2025, at Haile Grand Addis Ababa, the Green Innovation Lab Pitch Day marked a critical learning and capacity building milestone for emerging green entrepreneurs.

Beyond pitching, the day provided structured exposure, hands on learning, and practical feedback that strengthens founders’ readiness to respond to real world environmental and market challenges.

We extend our appreciation to our government partners, including the Addis Ababa City Cleansing Management Agency, Addis Ababa Finance and Development Bureau, Addis Ababa Environmental Protection Authority, and the Bureau of Labour and Skills, for their continued collaboration and commitment to advancing green innovation.

Learning, preparation, and partnership remain central to building resilient green enterprises.
