Security Culture - Basics for Protests
Album: https://news.1rj.ru/str/RevToolboxRedux/2155
Source: @covid19mutualaid on Instagram [I think, might be Twitter.]
A quick and dirty guide to protecting ourselves, our loved ones, and our movements from targeted State repression in mass protest situations.
GOOD SECURITY CULTURE:
1. Helps to protect from repression, violence, and retaliation at the hand of the State.
2. Keeps you and your social networks resistant to undercovers/informants, doxxers, and keeps our channels of communication as secure as possible.
3. Prevents information and plans from being intercepted, so nobody's party gets crashed.
4. Creates room for a diversity of tactics to be utilized and helps to support BIPOC, undocumented people, queer people, and others who are historically and systematically targeted by State violence.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU'RE ARRESTED
Cops use arrests as opportunities to ENACT PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL VIOLENCE in the hopes of deterring activists from continuing the fight.

Remember, there are only two things you need to say...
"I INVOKE MY RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT AND I WANT A LAWYER"
SAY BOTH! SAY NOTHING ELSE!
JAILS ARE A TRAUMATIC PLACE; YOU WILL LIKELY WITNESS LOTS OF ABUSE AND BE ABUSED.
—-
DO NOT CONSENT TO ANY SEARCHES. EVEN IF THEY TRY AND SEARCH YOU CONTINUE TO SAY:
"I DO NOT CONSENT TO THIS SEARCH".
You are not required to voluntarily unlock your phone; turn off your thumb print lock or Face ID ahead of time so they cannot force you to. Let your lawyer handle it.
When you are able to, use the NLG number you've written in Sharpie on your arm to make your call to a lawyer.
LEGAL RULES FOR PHONE CALLS: IT MUST BE PROVIDED WITHIN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME.
Sometimes it is longer if you're in jail over the weekend.
Remember that anything you say in jail or over the phone is being recorded and surveilled (don't talk about your charges or give any details)
—-
The policing system does its best to make you feel isolated and alone, but know that your community is working to get you out. We will support you legally, physically, and emotionally when you are out.
To get out of jail: usually you have to sign a release agreement. A lawyer will deal with that later.
WHEN YOU GET OUT, LOOK FOR JAIL SUPPORT!
They're almost always on the ground. They have water and snacks and can help get you home. Cops tend to take your stuff (keys, wallet, backpack, phone) so you'll need help when released. We protect us!
[Creating these resources in your town can be a major help in assisting people getting out of jail.]

USE YOUR RIGHT TO REPORT RESPONSIBLY
Protests are often led by and composed of over-policed populations and historically marginalized people, including Black, Indigenous, undocumented, brown, and LGBTQ+ activists, and those experiencing mental and physical disabilities.
Innocent protesters are frequently arrested despite not committing any crime, and identifying photos and videos from a demonstration could cause serious harm to them and their families.

Finally, private tech companies collect images and personal data on their platforms while developing AI that tracks, identifies, and monitors users online. Some companies even have data-sharing relationships with law enforcement. [FACEBOOK/GOOGLE]
