We’re thrilled to ring in the New Year first birth announcement of 2026 - two Pygmy falcon chicks!

These chicks were born in the our behind-the-scenes Avian Reproduction Center (ARC). To support healthy development and long-term success, our Aviculture Animal Care Specialists are hand-rearing the chicks in The Nest, a specialized facility dedicated to raising young birds. During the earliest stages, the chicks are hand-fed every two hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and housed in a specialized incubation unit that helps maintain optimal temperature conditions.

Pygmy falcons are known for their sleek gray plumage, with females displaying a distinctive chestnut patch on their backs. In the wild, they are also recognized for their unusual nesting habits—often sharing space with social weavers and helping defend their nests, though they may occasionally prey on their neighbors.
