Notre Dame ceased to be a Catholic university in 1967 when Father Hesburgh stole Notre Dame from the Catholic Church by issuing the Land o Lakes statement and putting it under a board of trustees which served a corporation of the state of Indiana, separating it from the jurisdiction of the local bishop.
Every statement issued by Notre Dame since that time has been a duplicitous attempt to give the illusion of Catholic identity while pursuing money from entities like the Ford and Rockefeller foundations and federal grants.
So, of course, the latest statement makes no sense.
