Hey Solarpunk people, I'd like to ask for a little bit of support. Bear with me, I'll explain:
TL;DR Project is to breed a free variety of Rye. They need 30,000 Euros for funding, but have only 23,000 so far. Deadline is June 3rd, 2022. 🌱
Link: https://www.startnext.com/en/roggen
Many seeds that are commercially available are controlled by a single company - no one may grown them on their own, but have to pay every year. These companies are heaviliy concentrated capitalist enterprises. If farmers can't pay the seeds, they can't grow food, and prices rise even higher. 💰
Open Source Seeds take an idea from software (free licenses) to achieve the opposite: Create seeds that are (and will be forever) free to use, remix and grow on your own, wherever you are. To me personally, this serves one of the main ideas in Solarpunk: Food autonomy. 💚
This special project tries to free one staple crop, Rye (used for bread, beer, vodka, ...) in the temperate climate. The organization OpenSourceSeeds was successful at freeing Tomatoes, Maize, Potatoes and Wheat out of their own pocket, and are now trying to do crowdfunding to free more species, faster. 🤝
If you find this a good idea in general, please visit the organisation's website, and think of ways to start or support your own open source breeding projects: 🤔

If you also think this is a good idea in particular, please consider to pledge a few Euros towards the goal (withdrawn only on success of the whole funding) and spread the word about the campaign:

A rye that belongs to all of us
Seed as commons and available for all enables diversity and self-determination. We are financing a free rye variety – and that's just the beginning.

Happy June from your trans and queer deer lawn-hater.
I pose a challenge to all of you this month: Don't buy a single goddamn rainbow thing from a large corporation. Don't let your family buy anything for you either. Don't let your friends do it.
If you're gonna buy something, go buy a YCH or something through a queer artist on Etsy. Go make something yourself. Go donate to an organization that helps queer youth. Go buy a rainbow of plants instead to replace your lawn. Do something meaningful - corporations don't actually care about you.

How many less people would die if we built around trains instead of cars? How much more space would we have? How much money would people save? Car infrastructure really is a nightmare in so many ways.

Reminder that today is International Sex Worker's Day. 80% of sex workers experience violence. Criminalization of sex work does nothing to stop it from happening. Decriminalization of sex work enables sex workers to seek help when they're being abused/exploited.
Looks like that last post got a little attention. While I have people's focus, consider donating to HIPS, the sex worker's advocacy group for the DC area!
