The leftist counterpart to the normally apolitical Found. Openly a psyop.

Okay, this is a PSA. Please understand that this is a developing situation, and information may change, but I felt it important to bring this up.

It was brought to our attention that the new 988 mental health hotline despite being marketed as private apparently uses geolocation in the US to find a caller in real time and reportedly dispatches police. This sounds like a good idea because if someone is in crisis, getting help as soon as possible is paramount.

HOWEVER, in practice sending law enforcement has an unfortunate reputation for going very bad very quick. (CW: police violence, suicide) I cannot get an accurate count here, but there have been cases of people having a mental health crisis or expressing suicidal tendencies being basically executed by police, but one agency reports as many as 25% of all police shooting fatalities involve someone who is dealing with mental health issues. ( source: https://ibpf.org/how-mental-illness-affects-police-shooting-fatalities/ )

[opinion]
I do not like this at all, personally. We've seen how local police treat individuals of a minority group, we all know it's a bad idea.

[data]
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website, "Currently, a small percentage of Lifeline calls require activation of the 911 system when there is imminent risk to someone’s life that cannot be reduced during the Lifeline call. In these cases, the crisis counselor shares information with 911 that is crucial to saving the caller’s life."
( https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/988/faqs - Line 13 )

While well intentioned, this decision appears to be at the discretion of the call center representative. And many people are expressing concern over this policy.

My opinion would be to find a well established and reputable mental health hotline for your area and save it to your phone until more information about this service comes in, we will continue to monitor this as things develop.
