Protein isolates from plants usually have reduced anabolic effects compared to animal proteins, due to their lower essential amino acid content (especially leucine) and lower digestibility (12). Hence, data from Hermans et al. (11) contribute to the promotion of edible insects as a high-quality protein source for human consumption. More data on the quality of insect proteins, in comparison to animal or plant proteins, are required to further evaluate the potential of different insects to respond to the global protein demand.
