While I've seen people say that their brain is filled with too many other interests to accommodate plants, I have to stress that this a little different than just memorizing a bunch of names or facts.
It's pattern recognition. It's not particularly different recognizing a literary device. Even if you don't know the names of two plants, it's being able to physically *notice* that there ARE two plants and what features make those plants distinct. You might not be able to recognize what species a plant is, but you'll be able to recognize what family it's in. Believe me, it's a lot easier to tell which plants are in the daisy family than you think.
Even if you don't know what species a plant is, you will be able to recognize that it is only growing in a particular environment. You can recognize it might utilize a very particular mechanism of seed dispersal because you're paying enough attention to notice the shape of its seeds. And, hopefully, you might just get curious enough to try and find out what the plant actually is.
You don't *need* some hyper-technical botanical identification guide to alleviate plant blindness, although that does help in some cases. You don't need to have an encyclopedic knowledge of how all the plants in your region are used. It's really just enough to know a plant's name and what it looks like.
