No one is evil. No one wants life to be worse. Even the worst people, the fascists, the rapists, the violent transphobes etc, are that way because they've been brought up into ways of being that put the self first at the expense of others, or that genuinely encourage beliefs that other people are inferior.

When I say this, I don't mean we should just try to "get along" with them. I don't mean we shouldn't try to stop them at every turn, that we don't have a right to defend ourselves and our communities against them. What I mean is that something has happened to someone who could have been an otherwise okay human being that has caused them to turn out that way, and it's our job as leftists to understand what that is, and how to stop it from taking more innocent people and turning them into their worst selves. But we can never allow ourselves to forget the humanity of ANYONE, even as we do everything we can to stop them.

I know I say this a lot, but my deepest belief is that the most essential leftist value is a strong belief in redemption, that everyone could and perhaps still can be a kind, responsible human being, if they only knew how.

And do I believe human nature is perfect? No, I don't. But I also believe that the most important distinction between humans and other animals is that humans are the only species that can consciously choose how we are. We don't have to surrender blindly to "human nature."
