Anyway, on the specific subject of "men are trash" rhetoric, because there's a lot of debate and blame about the election results on it going around rn:

I don't think it's to blame for what happened, and I think people are being weird and reactionary for arguing that point, but I do think it's part of a wider environment of ineffective rhetoric.

Aside from arguably being gender essentialist (failing to distinguish men are inherently trash v. Men are cultured to dismiss, disregard and disrespect women) it also fails to leave room in its argument for men to better themselves, by rhetorically making the issue about manhood as a state of being, rather than the conditions of modern masculinity (which hurt men too!)

Let's talk about the gay panic defense. The gay panic defense, in simple terms, is a common legal defense where the defendant in a case for assault or homicide of a queer person defends themselves by arguing that the queer person was making "unwanted advances," potentially allowing the defendant to dodge a more serious charge, such as a hate crime.

Here is a map (via Wikipedia) of states (in blue) where the defense has been outlawed. I am not sharing this information to cause panic, but to help queer people further understand their legal rights, and to provide a list of states to consider relocating to, if one sees it necessary to flee their home state to avoid the threat of violence.
