I would like to add though that this doesn't apply just to pedophile/rapist accusations, you'll see this sort of thing happen with people using ANY comparisons to an "inhuman" group as a line of attack.

One of the most memorable, influential examples of this was the comparison between those seeking abortions to Satanists and cannibals by fundamentalist Christians, as was influential in the Satanic Panic, and which arguably serves as a basis for a lot of q-anon adjacent conspiracy theories to date.
