First thing is that half of this post is blind speculation about motives. While I absolutely do believe that people are turning on adhd folks for culture war reasons, I'm not going to so far as to claim I know the motivations.
That small thing out of the way, I actually have very mixed feelings about the prevalence of ADHD medications! I was chronically underweight for most of the first 20 years of my life, something that receiving a noscript for an appetite suppressant absolutely contributed to. Maybe this is anecdotal, but I do have some serious reservations about whether medicating is the best answer for every adhd person, for very strong reasons.
Yet, in spite of this, I can't help but worry about the anti-adhd backlash. There's definitely always been a culture of "you're not disabled, you're just lazy" that's only very recently been challenged, and I really do worry about the progress on that being rolled back. I was told that shit most of my upbringing, and I'd be lying to say I still don't have problems with seeing myself in those terms.
In all earnestness, medication isn't for everyone, including some people with very obvious, difficult symptoms like myself. But as is the case in many situations like this, a bad solution is a hell of a lot better than no solution, and I absolutely do not, under any circumstance, want to see more people going through the unmedicated experience, either. Especially not because of bullshit moralizing.
This shit gets really hard sometimes.
